Behind The Scenes Of Paleons

"It's 2018 and new metal is sick."

Behind The Scenes Of Paleons
Ashley McMurray

Paleons started with Mark and Chris, but the band has gone through many members to find this current group of Mark, Brian, and Tim. Mark describes this iteration of the band as the best one he's seen so far. They are a tightknit group of people and a close group; Mark said it's easy to play new songs with them because they just instinctively understand what the other band members are doing. They've been working together for about a year and a half now.

Mark claims it isn't easy to find a group of people that work this well together. Paleons has a noise aesthetic instead of a typical song structure, which can make it difficult to find musicians. They have some members who aren't always with the band like their violinist Meg who's a very busy woman and tours with other bands.

"We're on tour and headed from Bakersfield to San Francisco at 2 am and we were all discovering how we liked Korn at some point in our lives," - Tim

"For the record, I've never been a Korn fan," - Mark

"Brian started singing some Korn songs and then he screamed 'KORN' and we all spent several minutes laughing and now it's our little inside joke," - Tim

"My favorite things would have to be my family (my wife and two children) and writing music. I also love traveling and cooking Mexican food!" - Mark

"Probably 90% of my life revolves around music in some way. Whether I'm writing it or buying new vinyl or working on guitar pedals, I'm constantly surrounded by music in some way," - Mark

"It's 2018 and new metal is sick," - Tim

Mark jokingly says, "We wish we were as good as new metal."

"Tim's the best guy. He's very intense but very sweet and he's always interested in what you have to say. He's serious but he still knows how to have a good time!" - Mark

"Brian is the sweetest and he's the cutest. He's my favorite emo dad because I'll mention an emo band that I'm listening to and he's probably seen them perform back in the late '90s and early 2000s. He has all the stories and his kids are adorable," - Tim

"One of my favorite moments from the tour was when we played in Santa Margarita, California. It was an insane venue and they had an outdoor kitchen where they could make pizzas and a huge koi pond and a literal house in a tree. There was a full stage set-up, as well. Everyone was so nice!" - Mark

"When we first arrived at that show in Santa Margarita, it felt like a late middle-aged church social to me so I was a bit anxious about performing. Once we started performing, kids and the older people were dancing to our music and just talking about how awesome it was. It was a tiny town, but it felt like half the town was there when we were performing!" - Tim

"My favorite things about Brian are his sense of humor and his conversationalist skills. There's never a dull moment with him." - Mark

"My favorite things about Mark are how he can get us out of any ridiculous situation ever and he's really good at getting sh*t done. He's extraordinarily responsible and driven and he wants to take care of the rest of us. He's basically our band dad," - Tim

"I have four favorites things: overeating, Age of Empires 2, that heavy fog right before a rain and, of course, Korn," - Tim

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
