It seems like nothing means what it used to anymore. What's up with dank memes, and when did being someone's bae become a compliment? Why must eyebrows be on fleek? There must have been a point in time when cool stopped referring to only temperature. What took place at the birth of cool? I don't know. Whoever started that craze was a master craftsperson; coolhas survived many of the passing word fads. Long lost are the days of solely classroom vocab lessons. Now, vocabulary can be created by anyone, and the older generation might find themselves student instead of teacher.
There are some new words that make sense. With the rise of technology and social media, a new vocabulary was required. It became normal to hear the word unfriend. No matter what your leadership skills, you can still have a thousand followers.
Words have also fallen. In the 1930s, an abercrombie was a know-it-all. In the 1920s, a bad date could be called a flat tire and alcohol was dubbed giggle water. Why did such interesting language fall out of favor? There is a definite deficit when it comes to interesting new lingo.
There are several ways to start creating slang. Maybe there is a specific social phenomenon no one has dubbed yet, or maybe you are just bored with everyday language. Either way, make sure to pick a word that sounds good and is easy to say. If a portion of the population can't even pronounce it, there's a good chance it will die out. Unfortunately, this rules out my favorite: indubitably.
Feel free to use a word to describe something that has nothing to do with the word's original meaning. Dank traditionally means musty. People just aren't lovin' those musty memes. Get creative! If the meaning is too close to the definition, you're really just spicing up your own vocabulary. Also, if the dictionary is just too large of a population to pick from, feel free to be the swingin' hepcat that bring's spifflicated back.
Once the word has been chosen, use it like it's no big deal. If someone gives you a funny look say, "What? You've never heard that before? It means __." It's also a good idea to find some accomplices. Ever heard of crowd mentality? If the new term is heard coming from different people, it creates the illusion that it is valid slang. Just keep saying it by yourself and it will become your thing, not a thing.
Just have fun with it! The spread might be slow at first, but with persistence and patience you might be the creator of the next dad bod.
