"That's the great thing about being an aunt, especially if you are lucky enough to experience it before you become a mother. It's a taste of what's ahead, a perspective-changer." - Jenna Birch
When my big sister announced she was having a child two months ago, I fell in love with a child that was not even born yet. Every single day I think of new reasons why I love this child and how I cannot possibly wait until he or she is born. I know I cannot be the only person out there who is overjoyed to be an aunt, so this article is just for you. All of the aspects that you have been thinking but have not yet said. Here are the five biggest things that cross your mind while becoming an aunt!
1. You cannot possibly contain your excitement about your new niece/nephew, so the basis of every conversation is about them and you refuse to let anyone else talk. "Have I told you that I am going to be an aunt? Oh, I did? Well too bad! Listen up."
2. Shopping has a whole new meaning when you are expecting a niece/nephew. Basically, you leave every store with a million bags for them and none for yourself. Even if you have not found out the gender of the child, you will inevitably find yourself searching through the baby section in every single store. "Hey, I just found the cutest Halloween costume for the baby. Yes, I know she/he will not be here until April, but this is actually really important!"
3. You spend every waking moment worrying about when that little bundle of joy is going to come and even have a code word so you can scramble around frantically making sure you do not miss this moment. Basically, you will spend the next 5+ months stressing about this issue.
4. You constantly try to name their unborn child even if they do not take a liking to the name. "You want to name your child Scarlet or Charlotte? How about Carolina or Meredith? Yes, I know this is not my child, but please just let me name them!" In the end, you will sadly always get denied.
5. I will be there when Mommy and Daddy say no. I will teach you Common Core math when Mommy does not understand it and will make cupcakes for class at the very last minute. I will let you eat ice cream for dinner and wear your pajamas all day. I will be there when you scrap your knee and lose your first tooth. I will be there through your first heartbreak and your preschool graduation. I will be there to shower you with love and "just because" presents. Basically, what I am trying to say is I will have the cutest niece/nephew and you cannot have them. So, here is to one of my newest and most definitely my best title thus far: Aunt Haley.
