With the semester half way over, it was natural that a little wanderlust would start to stir inside me. As a person who currently lives in Phoenix, I wanted to visit somewhere with cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery. I needed a break from traffic and fog and the constant mountain of homework that I can never seem to finish. Realizing that Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak just wouldn't cut it for me, I decided a small day trip to Sedona was exactly what I wanted to do. During my time up there, I had the opportunity to reminisce and reflect, enjoying my view and freeing my mind.
I visited the town with my best friend, knowing that I didn't want to go on this adventure by myself. The trip started around six in the morning and we didn't start the hike until eight. We decided Devils Bridge was the activity we wanted to do for the day and found the trail that led to it.
The bridge itself is pretty deep into the mountains, meaning that we needed four-wheel-drive to get to the base of the path. Since neither of us owned a jeep, we decided to just park farther and extend our hike a few miles more. I saw this as benefit, not only because we got in more cardio for the day, but also because it gave us more time to catch one another up on our lives. It only took about an hour to get to the peak, and boy, was it a sight to see.
The view was phenomenal. Looking at the bridge from far away, it didn't look sturdy and I told myself that there was absolutely no way I was going on that. But I think an adrenaline rush every now and again shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. After a small pep talk and three miles of hiking, I realized it's now or never and went up on it. We ended up resting on it for a while we ate and took a break from climbing.
The most memorable part of the trip for me though was how quiet it was. I'm not over exaggerating when I say that there was a deafening silence up there. Not a single thing could be heard from that bridge. There was no wind rustling the leaves or birds chirping at one another; everything was peaceful. It was a beautiful day out, so we sat there for at least an hour and embraced the natural beauty of the Sedona wilderness.
As a college student, we're at this point of our lives where we're rushing to grow up, that we forget that we needs breaks sometimes. I always find myself getting caught in the hustle and bustle of things that I forget to take a breather and end up stressing myself out. I realized that I needed this day of silence to embrace the nature surrounding me and not worry about the trivial things.
Whether it's a hiking trip or taking a day off, it's always nice to be able to sit back soak in the silence.
