For those who don't know, Disney finally revealed a first look into the live-action production of "Beauty and the Beast," set for a release on March 17th of 2017. The film was first announced over a year ago after months of rumors. It hosts a cast including Emma Watson as Belle (much to the excitement of all of us "Harry Potter" lovers), Dan Stevens as the Beast, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Luke Evans as Gaston and Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, just to name a few.
Until now, production has remained more or less a mystery, with little insight from the cast and next to no photos of the sets or costumes. But, with the release of the first trailer, we finally have a little taste of what to expect from this adaptation. Though it may seem that very little is given away in the trailer, and it may frustrate more than satisfy as it did for me (a die-hard fan of anything and everything "Beauty and the Beast"). It does at least reveal a bit more than some of the other teasers Disney has released in the past, like a certain movie from 2015 whose teaser featured simply a panning shot of a glass slipper.
Even though the "Beauty and the Beast" trailer showcased a lack of actors, costumes and general information about the actual plot of the film, it did still manage to give us quite a bit of information about what to expect in theaters next March.
First, the trailer immediately gives us a look at what can only be assumed to be the Beast's enchanted castle (which looks quite incredible in my slightly biased opinion), and then proceeds with an adaptation of the soundtrack from the 1991 cartoon production of the classic fairytale. This music suggests that, like the live-action productions of "Cinderella" and "Jungle Book," Disney plans to more or less stick to the original flavor and plot of the cartoon.
The trailer goes on to show us the famed ballroom, which, despite some frost on the floor and a few threatening icicles hanging from the chandeliers, looks like a near exact copy of the animated 1991 version. We also see the forbidden West Wing, and that key scene of the Beast ripping his portrait with his claws. This little snippet gave me a moment's pause, as there is a quite obvious difference in age between the live action painting of the prince and the cartoon imagining of the prince.
It always used to disturb me that the prince in the cartoon, who was supposedly a beast for 10 years at the start of the film and also about to turn 21-years-old, looked like a grown man at age 11, assuming that my math is correct. This apparently was called to Disney's attention, as the prince in the live action trailer looked quite young. This little detail brings with it the assumption that the timeline for the new film will closely correlate to that of the original.
From this insight, the trailer then shifts to the famed rose, which, in my opinion, looked very un-withered, despite the looming issue of time running out which propels the plot of the original. Along with this shot of the rose, we also get a very brief glimpse of Belle, the only actor physically present in the trailer.
Finally, with the presentation of the release date, Disney asks audiences to "Be Our Guest," appealing to the nostalgia the original film brings to mind, once again making us think that this new production may be quite familiar to audiences who grew up with the the 1991 film.
Though infuriatingly tantalizing and brief, the trailer exacts excitement from any and all Disney, fantasy and / or fairytale lovers, and has us all counting the days until March 17, 2017. The shots of the slightly decrepit yet beautiful palace are incredible, the voices of Cogsworth and Lumiere bickering pull at our heartstrings and the amazing Emma Watson teases a wonderful performance as the intelligent and gorgeous Belle, who is, in my opinion (again biased) the best Disney princess.
So, if you haven't seen the trailer, then go look it up right this minute, and if you have, then join me in watching it over and over again until the next one is released. Of course, mark your calendars for March 17 of next year!
