As everyone's most (or least) favorite holiday quickly approaches, we often wonder what we can do to overcome those holiday blues.
Not only is this holiday in the middle of the week, but technically, it's not even important enough to have the day off. So, while you're stuck in class or at work dreaming of this dreary day, here are some ways to combat those Valentine's Day Blues.
1. Binge a new show.
Starting new tv shows is always a good option, especially on one of the loneliest days of the year.
Need a laugh? Rewatch your favorite comedy.
Want to bask in this holiday? Go watch a cheesy Nicholas Sparks movie.
Don't want any acknowledgment of love? Check out that horror movie you've had your eye on.
Haven't had time to catch up on all of your shows? Use today as the perfect excuse to bawl your eyes out on This is Us or Grey's Anatomy.
Grab a glass or the whole bottle of wine, order some takeout, curl up on the couch with your favorite blanket, and go to town with the tv.
2. Take yourself on a date.
Who says you need a man or woman to make you feel special? Your mom and grandma think you are the most beautiful person in the world anyway, so why shouldn't you?
Go to your favorite pricey restaurant, order that juicy steak you love, and have no regrets about it.
3. Have a dance party.
Everyone loves to dance, whether they like to admit it or not. Sometimes, you just need to "Shake it out," especially on stressful days. Why not have your own mini-concert/dance party in the middle of the week?
Turn on some empowering music, sing to the top of your lungs, and dance your heart out.
4. Hit up the gym.
Did you see your ex-post a sappy status about their "perfect new babe?" Did it make you want to vomit a little inside, or better yet, break your not-fully-healed heart? Did it fill you with anger and jealousy?
Forget that loser, honey. You are so much better than that.
Use that anger as your fuel. Go for that run you've been doubting yourself about. Hit the weights and scream and cry as you do one more round.
Turn that despair into hopefulness and instead of hoping they will fall back in love with you, fall in love with yourself instead.
5. Call in sick.
Every one plays hooky every once in a while. Why not use today as your "sick day?" Eat a lot, cry a lot, enjoy yourself. Rest. If anyone asks, just say you had the 24-hour stomach bug.
6. Have a FaceTime date.
Are you in a long distance relationship? Or are you and your significant other too busy to celebrate the day of? Do something minimal but special.
Set a time to facetime, or talk on the phone a little longer than normal. Watch the same movie at the same time while on the phone. Eat dinner while Y'all are talking.
Don't have a significant other? You don't need one. Call up one of your besties, or even your mom or grandma. Spend some time with them, even if you can't physically be there.
Does it sound like any of these float your boat? That's totally fine. Valentine's day might seem like it is the holiday for couples exclusively, but in reality, it's just a holiday for love. Who says that it has to be romantic?
Embrace all the different types of love in your life: your family, your friends, yourself.
Spend this holiday celebrating and loving yourself. You are a strong, independent person who doesn't need someone else's approval. Remember and reflect on that!
