You go to a concert and the artist performing comes on stage. The whole stadium roars in pure excitement, this moment couldn't be any more spectacular. Automatically, you pull out your phone to take photos and videos because you want to have something to look back on in order to relive this moment. What you don't realize is that, as you start to record that video or stream it live for your friends to see what a great time you're having, you're no longer physically watching the concert. You are watching it behind your camera. As you take those photos/videos and scroll through and select which ones to keep and post later, you're missing what's before your very eyes, you're missing out on an experience you will only live once.
We live in a time where every moment needs to be captured. How on Earth will we ever remember something if we don't capture it electronically? It goes beyond capturing specific moments like birthdays, holidays, and vacations however. We've come to a point where everything we do has to be posted on social media.
We find ourselves posting photos of the food we're eating before we even dig into our plate… because yum, everyone should get this/want this.
People take Snapchats while driving OF them driving… because forget about other people's lives (or your own for the matter), everyone needs to see what car you drive, how fast you drive, and what music you listen to while doing this.
We go on vacation and visit places that are absolutely breath-taking. Instead of taking it all in, we take as many artsy pictures worthy enough for the 'gram, because aesthetics, ya know?
Why all of the sudden, do we need to share our whole lives with the world?
Mind you, I do say "We." This isn't me just pointing out a type of person. It has become the norm to overshare and live in the virtual world. Everyone has the right to share whatever they want and express themselves however they want, but just keep in mind everything you have to lose in doing so. I'm not saying don't take pictures or videos, but know when to let go of your phone and live your life the way people did before technology came along.
If you're gathering with friends you haven't seen in a while, enjoy a long conversation, laugh endlessly, eat all the food you want, but know that it's possible to have fun and make memories without living behind your screen.
If you go on vacation, do take pictures of sights, just remember to attach the emotions you feel in that very moment along with the memory, attach what you hear, what you see, what you smell and above all what makes you feel alive.
They say take a picture because it lasts longer, but you only have few moments in life that deserve your undivided attention. Don’t lose even a second in trying to share what you feel in that moment with the rest of the world, because there's no other feeling than being present here and now. Everything you experience only happens once, the people around you are here now. No one knows what will happen tomorrow so remember to live each moment like it's the last.
Phones have a "Do Not Disturb" button for a reason. Maybe give it a try sometime.
