It's getting to that time of year where we start to reminisce about our 2017: the good, the bad, and everything in between. But here's a question: how many of you can remember what your New Year's resolution was, let alone actually have completed it?
Or maybe you didn't even make one, like me, because you know yourself well enough to realize it won't stick. I've always thought the idea of a New Year's resolution was an excuse to wait until the last possible second to fix bad habits only to quit for a week, and then go about your life as usual.
This year I've thought more about why my own resolutions haven't stuck and I've come to the conclusion that they were just too negative. These should be positive changes I'm making in my life, but if they're carried out negatively, it's no wonder I've failed in the past.
So I've rewritten the most common resolutions I've made for myself and heard others make so that maybe we can see the changes we wish to see.
1. Don't stay up so late. Go to bed earlier and get more sleep at night.
2. Stop spending so much money on things I don't need. Start keeping a budget and downsizing on my belongings.
3. Don't overwork myself. Schedule self-care/ relaxation time.
4. Don't eat so much junk food. Eat more fresh foods.
5. Don't party as much. Find more wholesome and diverse activities.
6. Don't watch so much TV. Read more for pleasure.
7. Don't let your temper get the best of you. Remain calm and recognize things out of my control.
8. Don't procrastinate important things. Plan ahead.
9. Don't be so hard on yourself. Recognize your accomplishments.
10. Don't judge others. Be compassionate and empathetic
Whenever you're making a "resolution" try to keep it positive, but more than that even, keep it realistic and obtainable. You may have to come up with a plan to keep yourself on track and aware of yourself and your actions throughoutthe year. But if you work hard and reflect on these resolutions you might see better results in 2018 than you're used to.
