"Gilmore Girls." This show is seeped in nostalgic goodness. The denim jackets! The VCRs! The Bush-era politics! It was a show that paired pop culture, witty writing and genuine heart. Does this mean that a "Gilmore Girls" revival is a good idea? Coming out this November, some worry that the revival will only disappoint (although how anything could disappoint more than Season 7 is anyone's guess). However, I, ever the optimist, think that this revival will add to the canon and not detract, and these are my five reasons why.
1. We get to see (almost) the entire cast again.
When I heard rumors of the revival, I was excited, but I didn’t think that everybody could possibly be coming back -- and then I saw the cast list... And everyone is coming back! This is not a sad revival where there are like two original members -- they’ve got everyone at least making guest appearances.
The reigning Lorelai:
Lorelai in waiting:
Emily, the not-so-secret badass:
Rockstar (and now mom) Lane:
Melissa McCarthy at her sweetest:
The unhappiest (but funniest) Frenchman:
"Grumpy Good Guy," the wonderful Luke Danes:
Besides the main crew, we have the top three Rory significant others, Babette, Kirk and Patty. The biggest asset "Gilmore Girls" had was its colorful world of Stars Hollow and the people who populated it.
But most importantly…
Oh, Paris. Be still my beating heart.
2. We get killer new guest stars.
This is not just the old crew coming back -- the new characters are being played by heavy hitters, the actors and actresses who are only going to bring new depths to the source material.
Sutton Foster:
Mae Whitman:
Are you excited yet?
3. Amy Sherman-Palladino is back.
So let's talk about Season 7: it was a mess. Luke and Lorelai broke up, Christopher and Lorelai married and Lane got pregnant immediately after her honeymoon. This could have been forgivable had the writing been, you know, good and the story lines compelling. Instead, we got lackluster story arcs with pickle trucks, and mother/daughter banter exchanges that felt more like parody than anything else.
This was largely due to the exit in the 7th Season of Amy Sherman-Palladino as creator, writer, and show-runner. With the return of Sherman-Palladino this time around, we are bound to get some high-quality stuff, like the first six seasons (and also the criminally underrated "Bunheads!").
Plus we get to find out the famous last words of the series. (Finally!)
4. It takes place in 2016.
It’s a whole new world, people. So many new pop-culture references!
How does Stars Hollow feel about Trump? Do people actually have wifi now? Is Rory working for a BuzzFeed-esque blog? Is Hep Alien Tumblr famous? How does Luke deal with smartphones? (Head-canon time: Stars Hollow becomes obsessed with Pokemon Go, and Kirk almost gets run over, like, several times.) Does Lorelei still watch her VCRs and listen to her CDs, or is it all Netflix? I guess we'll have to wait to find out.
Speaking of Netflix, though...
5. The revival is on Netflix.
Oh, Netflix. Thanks to you, we are getting four 90-minute movies with no commercials. And maybe most importantly, we don’t have to wait a week in between each episode.
So let's celebrate with our pop tarts, pizza, and coffee and binge away!
