The man, myth, the legend, the president of the millennials, Barack Obama. He’s a man we deeply love and cherish in American history. Kind, funny, relatable, motivational, are all characteristics that describe Barack Obama. Musically inclined, if I must say, have you heard him sing Al Green's “Let’s Get Together”? His tone is immaculate, the pitch is close to perfect and his vibrato is absolutely wonderful. On and on, I could speak upon the talents of Barack Obama, but he deserves the biased praise that’s being received.
“Change”, that slogan was the start of something new, not to be quoting the legendary “High School Musical”, but it allowed individuals to believe in a future of prosperity and to be optimistic after the devastating recession that affected millions of Americans. The 2008 election was a gateway to an exceptional country. The future was near and Barack Obama, the senator from Illinois, was the man to bring Americans towards their goal.
November 4th, 2008, the day Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States of America. That day will be memorable in the eyes of millions, including myself and others. Watching the local news at 10 years old, hearing that Barack Obama was our new president, my mother shed a tear and I smiled widely at this great moment in history. At that age, I didn’t necessarily understand the historical monument of that election in 2008. Black men and women who fought on the frontline of the Civil Rights Movement would have never seen this day becoming reality. Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges furiously battled to end segregation and to allow equal rights for individuals of color. Barack Obama instantly became an icon in black history.
Now, in 2018, the USA is left with our toupee flying in the wind president, Donald Trump. In my opinion, he’s the farthest away from a history icon, not to be dramatic, but a shame to this country. A man who has made misogynistic, Islamaphobic, and racist comments, but was still elected president. Notably making comments about Hispanic individuals being rapists, implementing the ban on Muslims in the USA and even saying that he would date Ivanka if she wasn’t his daughter. My all-time favorite comment made by Donald Trump, in which he called himself “a stable genius”.
“A stable genius," the president of the United States of America isn’t just a genius similar to Albert Einstein, but “a stable genius,” in fact. Donald Trump is an interesting man being one of the first political figures engulfed in social media, concerned about live-tweeting the Oscars than improving the healthcare system for low-income families. Trump is continuously caught on Twitter insulting any celebrity or political figure because a comment was made not in favor of him but postpones creating laws to limit the accessibility of guns. The top priorities of our current president are disheartening and frightening. Individuals have even said that Donald Trump is evolving into the next Adolf Hitler, which is a bit of a stretch, but the future will tell.
Barack Obama, if you ever end up reading this, you’re deeply missed by the millennials in the USA. The legendary memes that were created during your presidency kept us all laughing during the darkest times of our high school careers. Donald Trump is disappointing us all as each day passes with little to no hope in humanity. So, please Obama come back because you’re MY president.
