If you're a music festival junkie, you've basically ignored the big font artist listed at the top of your favorite festival's lineup. We know we can count on headliners to be a good show but it's the little guys, spelled out in the tiny font at the way bottom of the lineup that gives music festivals their character and soul. That's what I found after searching the depths of this year's Firefly Music Festival lineup, which lead me to a nifty new band straight out of the Liverpool, BANNERS.
BANNERS first debut came in 2016 with the release of their self-titled EP "BANNERS," which lead singer Michael Nelson contributes his current success too. Michael says the band's first EP sounds like someone had just gotten their foot in the door. To him, producing a debut EP feels like "you're spitting into the wind," yet the excitement of having an entirely new creative experience was totally worth it.
Since the band's first release, BANNERS has come quite some way. The latest in BANNERS news is "Empires On Fire," the EP that may have landed them their spot on Firefly's lineup. Nelson says from the EP, the song "Empires on fire" is the song he is most proud of. While incorporating political, social and environmental issues Michael was able to write a song about something he cares about, without preaching to the choir.
"The things you sing about are made up exclusively of things you care about and you can't dumb things down, because that would be treating people like idiots... and they're not."
After falling in love with BANNERS latest EP "Empires On Fire," I've discovered their sound is exactly what the Firefly Woodlands needs. If you play their new EP and close your eyes, it sounds exactly like the music you would hear while you're walking around the festival grounds. Nelson says he's been performing at music festivals since he was 17 years old and truly believes "some of the best moments in my life have been at festivals."
In my interview with Michael Nelson he revealed a secret about his Firefly performance; BANNERS will be opening their act with "Let Go" a brand new song that hasn't even hit the band's Spotify page.
Firefly fans should be super stoked to be at BANNERS performance this year. Along with having the sound to fill the festival air with good vibes, BANNERS has the mentality for Firefly too.
"At a Banners' gig everyone is loved, everyone looks after each other and everyone is part of something. Then when we all go out into the world it’s better for it."
BANNERS sounds like the kind of band you would kick back and try to solve the world's problems with. That's exactly what Firefly is for, so clearly, BANNERS belongs at the Woodlands.
If you still aren't convinced that BANNERS has the music and the vibe to fit right in at Firefly, take a look at their new album "Empires on Fire" now!
