First off, let me begin by saying that fandoms sometimes have bad reputations, which is why some people think they are so bad.
Fans can be stuck up, rude and can even bully people sometimes, and I never understand why because artists wouldn't like or accept this kind of behavior and it breaks my heart seeing people be so mean to each other when music is supposed to bring people together, not drive them apart.
Despite what people may think, being in a fandom is actually a great experience and is so much more than just liking the band themselves.
First and foremost, you have the band and their music. Who doesn't want to fangirl over good looking guys and spend hours dancing around their rooms and/or crying to their music?
Don't even get me started on seeing them live. Live music is so much different from pre-recorded music and hearing your favorite songs live and in person while hundreds of people sing along will give you chills.
The next thing about being in a fandom is not so nice, but it's part of the price you pay for loving a band so much.
They will take your money. They won't literally rob you, but it may feel like it. They'll put out new merchandise, have sales, announce tours, album bundles, meet and greets...the list goes on and on, and long story short, your bank account balance will be damn near close to zero if it isn't already.
The nice thing about music is that you don't have to limit yourself to just one artist. Other people in the fandom sometimes post recommendations of other artists that they like, which can allow you to expand your music library and taste, and who knows, you may find another favorite artist to fangirl over.
I've saved the best thing about being in a fandom for last, because everyone knows I could go on about it forever.
Being in a fandom means that you will meet people. You may meet mutuals that you talk to now and then on Twitter or you may find a forever best friend.
What makes these people so special is that they're already so relatable even if you haven't met them in person yet. There's a chance they've experienced some of the things you've gone through and have found comfort in the artist that you both enjoy and that builds a bond that can never be broken.
Meeting these people can also be heartbreaking because a lot of times you meet them through Twitter, Facebook groups or Instagram. They may live hundreds or thousands of miles away and knowing that you'll probably never get to meet them in person may damper your mood, but just know that when you finally do, it'll make you cry but it'll also be the best day ever.
Being involved in a fandom, whether it's for a band, a show or even a book series can be one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do. Even though sometimes they get bad reputations because of fans or a number of other reasons, the positives do outweigh the negatives and can be one of the best things you ever do. I guarantee it.
