This week, Ball State University unveiled its rebranding - the change comes as a result of the university's new president, Geoffrey Mearns.
The branding was kept under lock and key, almost no one knew about what was to be unveiled on Monday, November 6, all that was known were the time and date that it would be done. So, when Monday morning arrived campus felt a little different, to say the least, there were banners and signs around campus, foreshadowing the brand that would be unleashed out into the world later that day.
People were handing usually large amounts of things out around campus, t-shirts, frisbees, car magnets, and who knows what else. All of these had two little words printed on them underneath the Ball State name; those words were: We Fly.
Now these words kind of intrigued me, but not enough that I spent the rest of my day worrying them. In fact, I kind of forgot about them until I was waiting for a class to start and I got a text that revealed those two little words were Ball State University's new brand.
And I was kind of disappointed, to say the least.
"We Fly" didn't seem like the slogan of my university, instead it sounded like something my high school's pep band would say as a joke during a basketball game. Nor is it how I imagine my university when I think of it and the reasons why I decided Ball State was the school for me. It also failed to make me excited about Ball State and the opportunities it offered.
"We Fly" was such a let down considering some of the other great ideas and slogans I had already heard from President Mearns. One such slogan came with the concept of bridging the Muncie community with the Ball State Community, and this slogan was: Better Together.
This idea had captured my heart and really made me consider what role I wanted to play within the Muncie community, even though I don't call this place my full-time home. It was a slogan that inspired change and made me think about what Ball State represented, without having to consider metaphorical meanings and images.
It made me proud to go to Ball State, and even want to tell others to come here as well.
So, when I say "We Fly" was a disappointment, it's because I already felt like Ball State had a slogan that would draw people in and help others get involved at the university. And I know rebranding is important, especially as a new person takes the lead because it needs to represent their values.
But that doesn't mean I wish the rebranding was stronger.
I wish it pulled me into the university and made me want to get more involved rather than make me question why I chose Ball State University three years ago. I wish it was something I would see on TV and be proud of my university rather than shy away from it. I wish the rebranding was something that made me eager to share it with others, instead of shying away from the topic.
And I know there's so much more to the rebranding than the slogan, but the slogan is something that will stay with people. And it leaves much to be desired, to say the least.
