Eighteen year old Jersey girl, Baker Grace dropped the first single from her soon to be released EP album, Girl, I Know. Her incredible debut, "Wrong Kind of People", was particularly exciting for me to listen to since I went to high school with Chloe Baker, the angelic voice behind Baker Grace. In high school, Chloe was only ever focused on one thing — her music and the feelings she could express by creating it. Her transformation from when she first started out at fourteen years old under the name Bitter's Kiss, into Baker Grace, has been such an inspiring journey to witness. Chloe signed to Republic Records but moved on to become an independent artist in the span of four years, and within that time she found who she was: Baker Grace.
Her music is a mix of indie, folk and pop, and her lyrics read like a story, a small glimpse into her world. In "Wrong Kind of People," you can listen to her personal struggle to solidify a sense of self while trapped in a world of other people telling her what to do and who to be, something we can all easily relate to. The newly released single is accompanied by a music video promoted by Forbes magazine. In her video, the viewer can see Baker Grace's management and crew attempting to dictate her image and persona. At the end, she seems to find the self-driven identity she's been looking for.
"Wrong Kind of People" is catchy, and Baker Grace's voice is powerful and haunting. The song has all the best aspects of a successful debut but the girl behind it is even more fascinating. To her fans, Baker Grace is an ambitious young girl, clearly driven by her genuine desire to pour her heart into everything she creates. To me, Chloe is the exact same. She isn't polished or presented in a way that isn't true to her own nature, a benefit of being an independent artist. She is exactly who she is, unapologetically, and this energy transfers into everything she writes and records. Her lyrics are her own, originating from a record of her experiences and emotions in her notes app, or from a day experimenting on the piano in her bedroom.
In her music Baker Grace makes you feel understood, and this is the same understanding and compassion Chloe Baker offers you while talking through life in her tiny kitchen. When I'm sad, Chloe sends me a song she wrote that she thinks describes how I feel. When you listen to her sing, you feel the way she does, because she vocalizes your own thoughts. Baker Grace chose to take a leap and pursue her music dreams without college. It takes bravery to risk the future of your passion at such a young age but when you listen to Baker Grace sing you'll see that it's all worth it. She puts her heart and soul on the line in every song she makes, and in everything she does.
From where I stand, it's doubtless that the whole world will one day know the name, Baker Grace. I'll always know and believe in Chloe, the strong young woman behind the name, but the same person, inside and out.
