Finding The Adventure In Everyday Life

Finding The Adventure In Everyday Life
Stella Childress

Everyone gets the craving sometimes. The craving to push life to the edge, tasting a rush of wind and feeling butterflies in their stomachs. Maybe this feeling comes from jumping out of a plane, climbing up a grassy, foreign mountain, or trudging through thick stacks of snow. Either way, the soul needs it to keep on keeping on with life.

Adventure lets us really feel life. They get us through the mundane of life, letting our hair run wild and our hearts beat faster. Sometimes life feels more like leaping from one adventure to the next. But what if every minute of every day was treated like an adventure?

Have you ever thought of the adventure in buying strawberries? First, you get in the car and drive through obstacles at 40mph. Sometimes even finding a parking spot can be a battle. As you approach the store you think of where to locate the strawberries so you can make the most of your adventure time. When the perfect pint is picked out you pay for them with money you worked hard to make. Every strawberry was picked and shipped from miles away, really on their own adventure.

Everyday can be an adventure. You don’t need mount Everest or parachutes. Your own backyard will do just fine.

It’s really all in the attitude. You can decide to dread the little tasks of life or you can turn them into adventures. With just a spoonful of imagination, vacuuming can be just as exciting as the stories in Peter Pan. Life is too short to be serious about vacuuming.

This is not just the stuff of kids either. Coming from a twenty-something, life is much better when you pretend that the floor is lava. We never lose our childhood imagination, we just burry them under practicality. It’s ok to spend 2 extra ours mowing your backyard for the sake of adventure.

Trust me, your spirits will soar high with just a few backyard adventures. Then, you will be hooked.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
