It happens. You're too busy thinking of the important things you need to pack for school and you forget some stuff that would make your year a whole lot easier. No need to fear for here is a list of items that made my freshman year in a dorm more bearable.
1. Keurig
You're a college kid and you need some type of caffeine to get you going in the morning or really any time. Yes, Dunkin and Starbucks are amazing (more so Dunkin, but I am biased) but you're also a college kid who can't afford a cup o' joe every single day. Do yourself and your bank account a favor. Time to stock up on some K-cups.
2. An over-the-door shoe rack
Use it for shoes or don't. It's a great way to organize anything you heart desires. I hung it over my closet door because the door I had would not physically allow hooks and be able to close all the way.
3. Noise-canceling headphones
Sure, most dorms have quiet or courtesy hours but there will always be a group or maybe a singular person who will rebel. My library had a floor that was completely silent but basically everywhere else was fair game. You need to focus and get your work done.
4. A Bluetooth speaker
I like to perform in the shower. Even in a shared bathroom. Also, everything is better with music. Hence the headphones above if you are not the one enjoying some tunes.
5. Some sort of laptop protection
Thankfully, no laptops accidents happened to me this year but I have anxiety about every minuscule thing so just listen to me and buy a cover. Better to be safe than sorry.
6. Pain medication/first-aid kit
I don't know about your brain business but I have headaches and/or migraines galore. I wouldn't survive without my handy dandy Ibuprofen. In addition, I ended up cutting my finger pretty bad trying to move around furniture and was able to clean the wound and wrap it up because I bought a cheap first-aid kit from Target.
7. Cleaning supplies
Your dorm will become a pigsty even if you consider yourself a clean person. I found a decent size vacuum on Amazon for a pretty good deal. Wash your floors and please dust! Your allergies will thank you.
8. Fairy lights
OK, maybe you don't NEED some twinkling lights in your dorm but it creates an ~aesthetic~ and who doesn't love an inviting dorm?
9. An extra blanket or two
Most dorms have heat but if it breaks then you're S.O.L. It's also a good idea to bring a fan for the hotter months.
10. Command Hooks
If applied the correct way, there won't be any damage to the surface it was on so you won't have to pay any damage fees. Bonus tip: Take pictures of any obstruction in your dorm the second you step into it so housing won't try to pin it on you and/or your roommate/s.
Don't let anyone tell you that you won't need something for your college dorm. You know your living style and what you like. Would you rather have realized that you actually needed something that a random swore up and down that you wouldn't use? What's the harm in bringing a little extra? Remember, look for sales, second-hand, and student discounts to save some money.
