To My Baby Sister On Her 11th Birthday

You are growing into the person you're supposed to be.

You know, as you get older, you get cooler.

You were the first baby sister I had, and I have to admit: you were incredibly annoying growing up. You're nine years younger than me, but we argued all the time. I think it's because we're so similar. We are strong, stubborn, set in our ways, and we both have a burning need to be right in every argument. Believe it or not, but those qualities will serve you well in the future.

You've grown up to be quite the character. I'd say a young lady, but if you're anything like me (which you totally are), you don't have the time to be a lady. And I don't mean that in a bad way, sissy. I just mean that you don't fit the traditional definition of a lady. Quiet, meek, and humble is just not you. You make your opinions heard. You are brave and not afraid to be proud of all your achievements. And you've achieved so much by 11. You are smart, much smarter than I was at your age. And you're an incredible dancer. I'm jealous, to be honest. I am so proud of everything you've done so far.

Know that I'll always be here for you, Lale. We might still argue from time to time, but you get cooler every day. I think that's because you're growing into the person you're supposed to be. Every day and every year you're getting more sure of yourself.

You've still got time, though. You've got all the time in the world to figure out who you are and change your mind. And know that I'll be here for every step and every phase.

Eleven is a big year, sissy. You're in middle school! This much closer to high school and college and the rest of your life. I've got a bit of advice for you, although you might not choose to listen to it. First, stick to your ideals. Do what you think is right, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

Talk more! You're cool, I promise, and everyone should want to be friends with you. You and I are the same in that we get so nervous when trying to make friends. Believe me when I say it doesn't get any easier at age 20 than it is at age 11.

Discover what you're passionate about and let it carry you through tough times. You've got so much love in that little heart of yours that you need to find somewhere to pour it out.

I hope you have the best day today, Valentina. Enjoy the presents and cake and all the growing up you've got waiting for you. You are one of my best friends, and I'm so lucky to have you.

Happy Birthday!

Love,

"Banoona"

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
