One of the main reasons I wanted to be a content creator for Odyssey was because I saw so many of my peers from across the country doing it. Every time someone had written an article about their brothers or sisters, I would tend to scroll past those – simply because I didn't have a sibling and I couldn't really relate. The articles that would get me to click *almost* every time were the ones regarding parents, single parents or grandparents. These usually led me to shed at least a single tear each article (sometimes happy or sad) and I would almost always share them. Here's my equivalent of a "click-bait" article (to tug at those grandparent heartstrings), and I really, really hope you enjoy.
My Babci was an extraordinary lady. For those who don't know what Babci means, it is Polish for Grandmother. I was too little to actually call her "Babci" so the name "Boby" became as commonplace as going to her house ALMOST every weekend. Born in October of 1920 she was an amazingly talented, kind individual who fell in love with a sailor and had four kids. One of them is my mother, and of course, she is equally as amazing as Babci.
But this article isn't about my mom, though I am sure I could do a ton of those articles. Babci had a way of putting things into perspective for me with her various sayings, especially the ones in her later life when she lived with my mom and I. She had unfortunately passed away at the ripe old age of 94 in 2015, on the same day her husband-my Pa, did 8 years prior. Talk about Notebook-esk huh? Here are some of what I like to call Babci-isms-
1. "Butter is the secret to everything."
OOPS! I just gave away the family secret. Just kidding. Everyone who knows me knows, I love using butter- but it all started from her. Thanks, Polish Paula Deen.
2. "Don't be afraid to season; nobody likes anything bland."
I'm sure this is self-explanatory.
3. "Come on, you have to have more"
Gains 40 pounds in a weekend.
4. "Are you sure you don't want that?"
Similar to a "treat yo self."
5. "Go ahead *hands me money* buy yourself something nice"
See #4.
6. "And how was your day" (repeat 4 times in 30 minutes)
This was one of her catch phrases later in life
7. "Where on earth did you find that recipe, you must give it to me"
Ah memories, sharing recipes.
8. "You're a good cook Zoe"
Still makes me smile today
9. "I Love you too Dahling"
It's that New Jersey-accented "Darling" gets me every time
10. "Oh go on and have a good time, you're only young once"
Amen to that!
11. "I'm How OLD? I don't look that old do I?"
You don't look a day over 75 Babci, I promise
12. And I hope when you're my age, you look back and don't regret anything you did or didn't do"
Also, who doesn't like Richard Gere, silver fox.
13. Everything works out in the end.
And if it doesn't- it wasn't meant to be.
14. My personal favorite: get an education, without it, people are awfully stupid.
I am pretty sure I am using this as a catch phrase now. Thanks Babci.
Rest in Peace little lady. I love you so much. "If heaven wasn't so far away." (1920-2015)
