For those of you who don’t know, Ayesha Curry (Stephen Curry, the current NBA MVP’s, wife) is making her mark in the culinary world. She’s getting ready to release a cookbook in September, among various projects, and is a strong advocate for healthy eating and fresh food. Most recently, she has become the newest face of ZÜPA NOMA, a chilled soup bottled in Sonoma, California. Released in July, ZÜPA is currently only available in stores in California (Hit up your local Sprouts!), but luckily, the company also ships all six flavors nationwide (at an inflated price, of course).
According to the company’s site, ZÜPA is produced using High Pressure Processing (HPP), which means that the nutrients are preserved and maximum freshness is guaranteed through a cold pasteurization technique. At 70-150 calories per bottle, the soups range broadly in flavors from sweet to spicy and make for a great little pick me up.
Before we start, let me confess that I’m not a big fan of chilled soup. I’m a strong believer that soup should be served hot and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong (and probably crazy). However, I wanted to see if Ayesha Curry knew what she was talking about.
Organic Tomatillo Jalapeño
Taste: 4.5/10
Consistency: Smooth! The consistency is most similar to a beverage you’d want to sip out of a bottle.
Final Thoughts: Spoiler alert: While I enjoy the consistency of this flavor the most, I like this one the least. The tomatillo/jalapeño combination doesn’t work for me. There’s definitely a kick from the jalapeño, though.
Organic Carrot Coconut Lime
Taste: 5/10
Consistency: Very thick
Final Thoughts: As a chilled soup, this flavor kind of fails for me. Maybe heat this one up and pair it with some rice instead because it reminds me a lot of curry.
Organic Beet Orange Basil
Taste: 8/10
Consistency: Medium (think applesauce)
Final Thoughts: I have nothing against beets. I don’t particularly love them, nor do I dislike them. All things considered, I liked this flavor the best as a chilled soup. The beet flavor wasn’t too strong. While I’m not a huge fan of the consistency, this flavor was the least painful for me to work through. (I still couldn’t drink the entire bottle, though.)
Organic Yellow Pepper Habanero
Taste: 6.5/10
Consistency: Medium
Final Thoughts: If you don’t like garlic or spicy food, this isn’t the one for you. The flavors are so strong that I could barely have more than three sips in one sitting. The consistency also reminds me a lot of applesauce—a little chunky, and frankly, odd to drink out of a bottle.
Organic Tomato Gazpacho
Taste: 7.5/10
Consistency: Medium
Final Thoughts: Honestly, this just tastes like I’m drinking a blend of pico de gallo. Where the tortilla chips at?
Organic Cucumber Avocado Fennel
Taste: 7/10
Consistency: Medium
Final Thoughts: The cucumber and fennel flavors are very apparent. This one’s fairly refreshing, but I wasn’t able to drink the entire bottle. However, it definitely has a cleaner, crisper taste, and the fennel isn’t too strong.
Bottom line:
I wouldn’t purchase any of these again. While they’re not the worst drinks I’ve ever had, chilled soups with odd consistencies are not something I will ever enjoy. But hey, maybe it’s your thing! Don’t knock it till you try it, yeah? And while I appreciate the simplicity and ease of the bottle design, it’s odd for me to drink soup without a bowl and spoon. So, no, I didn’t finish any of these soups, and yes, I just washed $35 down the drain.
Sorry Ayesha, but I’m not amused. (I still love you though.)
