That Was Beyond Awkward...Thanks, Mom

No matter what I will always love my mom, but she has definitely put me in uncomfortable situations that if up to me could easily be avoided.

That Was Beyond Awkward...Thanks, Mom

A mother's love is unconditional and being lucky enough to have someone like my mom in my life is truly appreciated. Growing up, my mom always went above and beyond to make sure that I was loved and protected at all costs. However, the measures to which this was done was often extreme, leading to some pretty embarrassing stories.

Here are some of the most memorable situations I was put into because "momma's always right:"

1. New Student Orientation:

Going into Penn State, I was initially worried because a lot of the people that were going from my high school weren't exactly my type of people. Penn State is 3.5 hours away from where I live, and my mom HATED long car rides. She begged me to try and reach out to someone to carpool and wouldn't take no for an answer. I awkwardly had to spend this ride with someone I barely knew, but luckily it turned it a pretty great friendship.

2. That time when the bus never showed up:

After waiting around for a few hours at the Greyhound bus station, we find out that the bus wasn't going to come. My mom worked the next day, and it was already pretty late in the evening. I mentioned earlier that I saw this guy from my high school waiting for the same bus. She literally brings me over to him and his parents and starts acting like we were old friends... I worked with him for ONE group project, and that's it. Before you know it, me, him, and his grandmother were crammed into the back seat heading back to Penn State, complete with a mild fender bender.

3. That time she made me ask the guys down the hall for tech support:

It was freshmen year and I couldn't figure out how to connect my printer to the WiFi for the life of me. My mom tried walking me through some instructions over the phone, but it still wasn't working. She told me to walk around my floor and see if any of the boys could help me out. I was TERRIFIED, considering how attractive they were.

4. That time she bought me a doorstop to make friends:

I am not going to lie...the first few days living on a floor of all guys was definitely not easy and for sure an adjustment. You told me to keep my door open as a way to meet people, and I wasn't having any of it. My roommate, however, put the doorstop to good use and all of a sudden guys were walking into my room left and right.

5. That time she tried to set me up with the cashier at American Eagle:

Yes, I appreciate the fact that you're always trying to be my wingman. Yes, I appreciate how you break the ice and get the conversation going. Yes, I still want you to do this, so I'm not single all my life. However, this does not make the situation any less nerve-wracking and awkward for me.

6. That time you contacted all my roomies because you thought I was drowning:

In all fairness, it was pretty funny when I was at the bar and I got a text from you with my bitmoji in the middle of the river. Thanks for continuing to hit up all my roommates and friends when I wasn't answering you. Glad to know you care about my safety even when I'm on the other side of the world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
