5 Ways To Avoid Summer Boredom

You've been home for over a month...what now?

5 Ways To Avoid Summer Boredom
Whitley Taylor

We’ve reached that point in the summer: you have been home long enough that you’ve seen all of the friends you’ve wanted to see, you’ve eaten at all of the restaurants you’ve wanted to visit, you’ve spent all the time with your family you think you need. And yet, there is still so much time left in the summer. You can’t spend all of your days at your summer job, so the rest of the time seems like you’re just bored in your hometown for the summer. There are plenty of ways to avoid your summer boredom, and most of the things don’t fall far from home.

1. Do something touristy in your hometown

I bet there are tons of different things that you have never tried just because you were too afraid it would hurt your pride because you’re “from there.” Let all the judgment go and check out a local museum or a local beach.

2. Read a book

I know it’s cheesy to say, but reading does make you smarter. And now that it’s summertime, you can’t use the excuse of “Oh, I’m too busy.” You’re not too busy. Spend a few minutes that you would normally use scrolling through Instagram to read a few pages of any book. You might get so hooked that you won’t be able to put it down.

3. Visit a college friend in their hometown

What a perfect way to catch up with a best friend who you haven’t seen in a month or so. See what their life at home is like, take a roadtrip, meet their friends. It beats sitting at home for a week.

4. Update your resume and LinkedIn page

I know you don’t want to think about the “real world” during the summer, but now is a perfect time to update all of your information in preparation for next school year. Add what you’ve been up to for the last year, as we all know you’ll get too busy to do this once school starts again.

5. Dust off your bike and go for a ride

My guess is that last time you used your bike was before you had your driver's licence, which means it’s probably been years since your last bike through your neighborhood. It’s a great source of exercise and you can enjoy the warm, summer weather while doing so.

While there are hundreds of other ways to keep yourself entertained throughout the summer, try a few things that don’t involve staring at a screen all day. Try new things, make new memories and rest up for the upcoming school year. But don’t spend all summer twiddling your thumbs, trying to come up with something to do.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
