Auf Wiedersehen, And Thank You, To Freshman Year
Jay Silver

As of this article, I'm nearly done with my freshman year. This year had many rocky moments. A depressed slump to excitement, and the cycle in repeat. There were moments where my bed became the safest spot. Other days, excitement and energy burst at the seams. It still has its tough patches. But there is a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. Freshman year turned from sour to sweet with turbulence thrown in between. But this is my letter to the good. To the things that when I hit my low, they brought me back up. And while things still change, I know these particular things in my life will not:

Thank you to MCCTA...

Thanks for letting me take part in Almost, Maine. It got me accustomed to the theatre life at Marist. Thanks to the actress who played Ginette, for being the first scene partner who ended up becoming my closest friend in that process.

Thank you to the costume crew of Cabaret for welcoming the first (and probably only) guy in costume crew history. It was amazing to work on a show from a different perspective. And also a thanks to the theatre community in general for giving me a place to call home.

Thank you to Leo Hall...

While you may have not been perfect in many ways, you gave me a roof over my head. You gave me a bed to sleep in. You gave me a roommate who respects me. You gave me RAs and an RD who I looked up to as mentors, big sisters and brothers, and a family. You gave me an e-board who I can continue to be friends with for years to come.

Thank you to the Game Society...

While playing video games is probably the wrong way to escape problems, I thank these nerds for giving me an escape to the calamities of life and struggles of the day. Thanks to the Yu-Gi-Oh table in the back and Pokémon on the side. I've never had a chance to be an utter geek each week without being completely judged.

Thank you to The Senate...

This mostly starts next year, but thank you people for giving me my chance. Thanks to the voters, and I promise as sophomore year comes around, I will not let anyone down.

Thank you to the Music Department...

Whenever I was down, the music department was there. Sure, I may have driven everyone there crazy, but this department is truly the real hero of the year. Every piece of music, every inside joke, every moment of sheer bliss and every tear shed. From the first day of camp to the final Afternoon with Chamber, unending love and care was had. Thanks for welcoming me in.

Finally, thank you to my friends!

As the socially awkward guy, making friends is often a difficulty. Somedays, it's tougher than others, but my friends stay by my side through thick and thin. I cannot show enough appreciation for all that you do through everything. Whether it'd be listening to my rants, talking about nonsense or going to fun events like concerts, you are always supportive nonetheless and I love you all for it!

And so I conclude...

Auf Wiedersehen, Au Bientot, see you next year Marist.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
