I go to Alfred University and when I say Alfred is a small town, I mean it. College life isn't bad, though. There is Alfred University and Alfred State, and they're across the road from each other. Literally, downtown is what separates the two schools.
Small town colleges are great, but they're annoying at the same time. I can deal with the annoyances, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop complaining.
1. It’s far... from everything.
The closest Walmart is about 30 minutes away, and what even is a mall?
2. The local convenience store is overpriced.
I’m sorry, but I’m not spending $25 dollars on a pair of scissors — that's ridiculous.
3. Sometimes college feels like high school.
The small school can give off high school vibes because of the small class setting, and let’s face it, we’re over high school.
4. You see the same faces every day.
Don’t embarrass yourself at a party, I promise you’ll see those same people almost every day. Not to mention if you don’t like someone, you’ll more than likely see them three or four times a day.
5. Food places are limited.
Say goodbye to your favorite food place because it’s not within walking distance by any means.
6. The local bus.
It’s so convenient, and I’m so thankful for it, but it’s difficult if you need to do hardcore shopping.
How am I supposed to carry a vacuum across campus?
It's not all bad, though, I definitely have good things to say about small college towns.
7. There is a great student to teacher ratio.
You’re not a number in the classroom — your teachers know who you are, and they will do anything they can to help you.
8. You'll always have a support system.
Between faculty, staff and overall community, there’s great support surrounding you. No one wants to see you fail.
9. School pep at football games is amazing.
There’s not a lot to do when you’re in a really small town, so when football games come on, the whole college community and town are there to show school spirit.
10. The view and scenery.
Being in the middle of nowhere has its perks, the view from just about everywhere is amazing. No matter if the trees are covered in snow or if the leaves are changing, Instagram worthy pictures are around all year.
11. Student life.
Everyone is aware that the town is kind of boring, so clubs on campus really try to have events every night.
12. There's a sense of safety.
Security is an essential to have, and on a small campus town, the crime rate is generally low. Deer popping out of nowhere is the main thing you have to worry about.
Small town colleges have pros and cons, but, overall, I’m content on a small campus. It's really grown on me, and right now, I don’t think I’d rather be anywhere else.
