With Memorial Day Weekend upon us, I'm sure everyone is getting into the American spirit. What is more American than the beach, honoring those who have served our country, having a BBQ, bathing suits that look like the flag? The answer is, of course, music festivals. While the Budweiser Made in America Music Festival isn't until Labor Day Weekend in September, it is never too early to start thinking about your plans for another America-filled weekend.
No matter where you live, Philadelphia is the place to be on September 2nd and 3rd. Every year, Jay-Z puts on a music festival with the help of the two main sponsors, Budweiser and Citi Bank. In the past, headliners have been Kanye West, Kings of Leon, Beyonce, The Weeknd, Chance the Rapper, Rihanna, and Coldplay. For 2017, the lineup includes acts such as Migos, 21 Savage, Marshmello, Cash Cash, Solange, and Kaskade, with headliners J Cole, The Chainsmokers, and none other than Jay Z himself.
If you're like me, you know these singers, but not really enough of their songs to call yourself a fan. However, it is more than worth it to still go and experience new types of music. Last year, I did not know a lot of the artists, but after seeing them perform live, my opinion totally changed and I still listen to their music. And, even if you're still not convinced, the headliners should sell you enough.
Jay Z and J Cole double headliner should be a performance for the ages. While I am not sure how it is going to work out, both artists are sure to put on an amazing show. Jay Z is iconic in the music industry and has been touring for ages. No matter who you are or what music you like, you know at least five songs that Jay Z has sung on by heart. Seeing him live will be an experience like no other. As for J Cole, he has both old hits and new ones coming off his album, "4 Your Eyez Only." He is a versatile artist that should appeal to the masses and I am excited to see the energy that he brings to the stage.
The Chainsmokers are a completely different breed than the other two headliners. Whether you love them, hate them or anything in between, you cannot deny the popularity of their music. Whenever I turn the radio on, one of their many hit songs are playing. You cannot escape their music. Even if you dislike them, being in a crowd where every single person knows every word to almost all of their songs should be enough to make up for the fact that their music is overplayed. In my opinion, dance music is the best to have at a festival, since it brings the crowd together and creates insane energy. I have seen videos of their live performances and I would be lying if I said I was not the least bit excited to finally see the duo live. I think this will be the highlight of the weekend and I cannot wait to be squished up against my friends, singing our hearts out and enjoying the moment.
If the musical acts haven't convinced you yet, let's talk about the food. Made in America brings in some of the best food trucks around and places them all in one location. I had some of the best mac and cheese of my life last year and will definitely be stalking out that truck again. There was also pizza, enchiladas, general fair food, BBQ food, and ice cream - that was just what I saw. There are a variety of drinks available, including free water stations around the site and alcohol for those who are 21+. Half the fun of going to festivals is trying the food available from a variety of Philly staples.
Lastly, you cannot beat the view of the festival. Situated on the Ben Franklin Parkway, the main stage is on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art with views of the skyline all around. It is such an iconic location in Philly and being there for a music festival is even cooler. The best part is going back to this location after the festival and just soaking in the fact that you stood in such a historic place and watched some of your favorite artists. Unlike other festivals which take place in a wide open field, Made in America gives off a different vibe that you really can't experience anywhere else. You are spending unforgettable moments in Philadelphia and the energy from the city is evident in the festival.
So, if you're in the Philadelphia area this Labor Day Weekend, consider buying a pass to the Budwiser Made in America Music Festival and I promise you will not regret it. It is an experience that must be had and I am thankful that I go to school close enough to the venue so I am able to attend. If you are going, I'll see you and your favorite red, white and blue outfit in September!
