"There's a special place in hell for women who don't help each other."
Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright coined this phrase years ago. However, Albright's trademark quote gained widespread recognition in 2016, after she was criticized for the context of its usage while speaking on Hillary Clinton's campaign.
Regardless of your opinion about the quote, there's no denying that the idea behind the statement has gained much momentum, especially within the realm of feminism.
Go no farther than Instagram to see female celebrities, "public figures" and various opinion leaders promoting the importance of women supporting, encouraging, and respecting one another with new-found vigor.
At its base, this is a worthy movement. Supporting fellow females is an important practice that I believe in very much. And, just as I believe ALL lives matter, I believe ALL women (and men) should be treated with respect, and never attacked for their personal ideas or beliefs. No exceptions.
However, there's one major flaw with this concept -- the double standard for the treatment of women whose politics, morals, and beliefs don't align with the hot-button topics of 21st-Century Feminism.
For some reason, it seems that much (not all) of society has accepted the idea that women who don't uphold popular, Progressive views don't deserve the same level of support and respect as their liberal counterparts.
Ironically, the very same people who are calling for the acceptance and support of ALL women, are also the ones who turn around and attack the physical appearance, intellect, and maturity of the women whose politics and policy don't align with their own -- not exactly the female-to-female support sprinkled all over social media.
Forbes contributor Karen Lips says it best when addressing Chelsea Handler's attack on Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders' physical appearance.
"The attack shows how liberals often see conservative women—as not fully developed women at all," said Lips.
Therein lies the problem.
It's why people, like Carol on Pinterest, feel justified in making comments like the one below about a fellow female whom she doesn't know personally but obviously disagrees with.
Because, apparently, having different political views is grounds for attacking someone else's intelligence.
To be clear, this isn't just a "liberal versus conservative" issue. There are many instances of disrespect across and within partisan boundaries. As a woman, I believe this hypocritical and damaging trend is just too ironic and important not to discuss.
It's time for the double standard to end. If you claim to be a champion of women and a supporter of your fellow females, you don't get to pick and choose which women are or are not worthy of your support and respect based on partisan differences.
Sorry. That's just not how it works.
