Do you want to be in a field that's creative? Do you love the arts, but also want something more desk-oriented? Do you want something that combines multiple aspects of multiple careers? Then look no further, for a career in Arts Administration wants you!
Arts Administration, Arts Management, or Arts Business, is the world of making sure the arts actually happen. More specifically, it's the business side behind running mostly non-for-profit arts-related organizations.
Arts Admin is made up of multiple different subjects, including but not limited to: marketing, public relations, accounting, economics, events, fundraising, law, journalism, photography, graphic design, social media, and media relations. Luckily, in the world of Arts Admin, there are many different paths to choose from, or you can try them all!
A career in Arts Admin can bring you to any arts-related company or organization. These can include dance companies, dance schools, music companies, music schools, theatres, art galleries, art studios, and museums.
Typically those of us who are in this field are first and foremost artists. One has to be passionate about the certain art form or organization they are working in and has to be ready to wear one of the many Arts Admin hats mentioned above.
The job includes being up-close and personal with the respective art form, but not actually having to do it. It offers a stability and academic-side to the arts world, while still having a huge hand in the arts themselves.
A degree in Arts Administration is usually a Bachelor of Science. The amazing thing about most of these degree plans is that it sets you up perfectly for working in this world: multiple courses in different topics, including both business and the desired art form, a jam-packed schedule, the opportunities to try multiple things at once and to hone in on many skills.
The degree itself is almost a double major; typically there are just as many arts-related courses as there are business ones, making you feel part of both worlds equally and well-rounded in so many different areas of work. You might feel overwhelmed at first, but you always feel accomplished.
I never thought I would be pursuing a business career. I remember being a stubborn 18-year-old, touring my now university and hearing about this degree plan, thinking I would never ever want to pursue anything related to business. Ballet was the only thing on my mind 24/7, and all I wanted to put my energy towards in college.
But as I started my freshman year working towards a BFA in Dance Performance, I missed pen and paper, and putting my mind to work in ways that ballet couldn't satisfy. I also wanted more to show for my college years; I work extremely hard at my school work, and I know I would feel more satisfied in courses that actually interest me academically instead of just general education required courses.
A person in Arts Admin has to be dedicated and passionate, has to be ready to take on multiple responsibilities and wear multiple hats. They have to be ambitious, put themselves out there in a little-known career without much support. But they also have to be confident in themselves and the arts, for whole purpose of Arts Administration is to continue the arts.
Typically, arts organizations are run by artists themselves, who might not have any formal training in business. This degree is designed to help the organizations properly run their business in order to continue existing and provide more beautiful art to the world.
Especially in today's political environment, the arts need all the support and formal education they can get. Universities around the country are beginning to offer Arts Administration in both undergraduate and graduate degree plans, so if these qualities appeal to you, go check some of them out!
