Artists Are Using Their Voices To Talk About Mental Illness

As a person who turns to music when I am having a bad day, I really love it when you can feel the artists emotions in a song. Artists like Demi Lovato, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford are all open with their struggles within themselves. They are not afraid to talk about things that are issues within our youth today, that is something that I admire about these artists. Not only do they create music that helps anybody through a bad day, but they are creating a platform where it is okay to speak about things that society seems to have forgotten about.

5 Seconds Of Summer's drummer and guitarist, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford believe that it is important for artists like themselves, that have this platform, to talk about issues that so many of their fans are dealing with. In an TV interview in their hometown of Australia, Irwin explained how important he thinks it is that his band has a platform to talk about mental illness and that they do. With so many of their fans, and the band themselves, are dealing with a mental illness. Irwin says, "We have the voice to talk about it, so we will", he believes that if an artist has a voice to talk about something as serious as mental illness then they should! Irwin even showed his support for anyone who is battling anxiety or depression, telling them that they are not on their own.

Irwin's bandmate Michael Clifford is also all for using the platform and voice that they have to get the word out there about mental illness. Clifford first opened up about struggling with mental illness in their Rolling Stones cover, since then he has been very open about his struggles with himself. He believes that many artists have the platform to make society aware of something a lot of teens are suffering from today, but they don't. Clifford wants to make sure that their band is using their voice to make sure that their fans never feel alone. All artists should take note of how these guys are using their platform to bring awareness to something like mental illness that is often overlooked.

In the newest issue of Kerrang! Magazine, Irwin talks about his battle with depression while nonstop touring with his band 5 Seconds Of Summer. He says, 'At some stage, you gotta be like, I feel like shit, I just don't wanna do it' He continues with 'I felt depressed. You're not connected with nature.' That's why on this tour the band decided to mostly play outdoor venues on their Sounds Live Feels Live tour.

Artists such has 5 Seconds Of Summer are really trying to bring light upon something that not only has an impact on themselves, but on their fans as well. They know that they have a voice and they figured out how to use it in their favor, they know they have people's attention and they are making sure their voice is heard. They are helping bring awareness to mental illness and how it affects everyone, all while making sure that we never feel alone.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
