On Monday morning, Louis Vuitton announced a new men's artistic director Virgil Abloh. This is announced after Kim Jones (previous artistic director) announced his leave in January, last week it was announced that Jones would be the new menswear designer at Dior. Abloh is the first African-American menswear designer for Louis Vuitton.
Abloh is the creative director of Off-White and is a DJ in his free time. He will relocate to Paris with his wife for the position and will continue working for Off-White.
"Having followed with great interest Virgil's ascent since he worked with me at Fendi in 2006, I am thrilled to see how his innate creativity and disruptive approach have made him so relevant, not just in the world of fashion but in popular culture today," said Michael Burke, CEO and chairman of Louis Vuitton, in a statement.
"His sensibility towards luxury and savoir-faire will be instrumental in taking Louis Vuitton menswear into the future."
Abloh has a detailed and unique take on streetwear that took him to the next level. His talent to create must-have pieces is what put him as a frontrunner for the job.
Louis Vuitton collaborated with Supreme last year and saw their business numbers skyrocket. The company is looking for a street style future and Abloh is the perfect man for the job.
He will present his first collection at the Men's Paris Fashion Week in June.
