Ever since my first concert, I have never truly understood the purpose of opening acts. I used to think, "Who are they? Why can't I just see (insert your favorite music artist) now?" among other questions I had. And since my first concert at the age of fourteen, I have seen some decent opening acts, including 5 Seconds of Summer, Tori Kelly, and others; however, I never enjoyed their performances. I was impatient for 'the real concert' to begin.
The last concert I attended was almost a month ago, and I walked into the arena with the same expectations for the opening act. I was seeing Harry Styles for the first time post One Direction hiatus. Harry's opening act was Kacey Musgraves, and although I thought the name sounded familiar, I had no idea what to expect from her as an opening act.
Like always, I used the opening act's performance to buy merchandise, use the bathroom, and walk around the arena. Yet, this concert was in Madison Square Garden, an area that I was all-too-familiar with because of New York sports events that I have gone here my entire life as a New Yorker. So, my stroll around Madison Square Garden was cut short, and I returned to my seats to watch a decent bit of Kacey Musgrave's performance.
By the end of her performance, I had already remembered the names of a couple of her songs that I really enjoyed listening to. I wrote them down on my Notes app, anxious to add them to my Spotify playlist later that night. All in all, I was blown away by Kacey's outright talent and catchy songs-- I finally realized that I could enjoy an opening act just as much as the main headliner of the tour.
I guess my expectations for this concert's opening act were biased because I was not expecting to hear Kacey's country sound. I am a fan of all types of music, and sometimes I do like to mix up which genres I listened to, and I was glad that Kacey caught me off-guard, surprising me with her music style. Not even a week after, I was listening to Kacey's song on a loop throughout all my car rides, which convinced me that my impression of opening acts was wrong.
