The topic of art in education has been debated for many years. Schools have been deciding whether or not to keep art in their curriculum. According to Center for Online Education, an estimate of 25% of public schools have dismissed art classes from their curriculum.
The dismissal of art classes have an impact on students and teachers. It causes any Art, Theatre or Music teacher to lose their jobs. It also deprives students of creative learning. According to Center for Online Education, A 2002 report by the Arts Education Partnership revealed that children who are exposed to drama, music and dance are more likely to excel at reading, writing and math.
The arts challenge you to think a different way and test your mind. It helps you think outside of the box. According to Katy Independent School District, "education in the arts is an integral part of the development of each human being." The fine arts introduces culture and has for years.
The arts go hand in hand with history. When you are in history class and you talk about the Renaissance Period, you talk about the art and you look at the paintings. The music from each decade is one of the ways we document life and we hold the paintings in museums. These things should be taught and learned about because the Arts is our past, present and future.
According to Education Week, exposing children to art and culture has a big impact on their development. Art gives kids a chance to find who they are and learn to love learning. It brings out their creativity and curiosity about the world. It makes a connection with their culture and other cultures. It challenges their brains to think in different ways and see things in different ways.
Every student is different. When they graduate high school they are going to pick a route, whether it is going to be college or going straight into a career. In school they are supposed to be taught all of their choices. Learning science, math, history and english but they also should be learning art, music and theatre. They should be given the option of choosing to go into the arts.
The Arts challenge students just as much as the other subjects, it is just in different ways. There are many parts of the brain and as a child their brain is developing, therefore, you should exercise all parts of it. Challenge their skills to solve equations and also challenge them to think outside of the box.
Art is in no way irrelevant because it is everywhere. Every human has a favorite song whether it is classical, hip hop or rock. Paintings fill the museums and create a timeline in history. Dance is in every step we take and theatre is the closest we get to a dreamland. It is apart of our culture and is apart about learning others culture. It is a big part of our human existence that gets often looked over. Almost every day you experience some aspect of art whether you pass by a painting or listen to music in the morning. Art is apart of our human existence and it's experiences should never be taken away from someone.
