The misconception of being an art major is that I do all art all the time without a care in the world. It's what I love to do, so I'm living the dream, right? Yeah, but that doesn't mean that it's not still school work that I have to deal with completing on time and to the best of my abilities. Let me tell you why art majors can definitely hold their own against any other major on campus.
1. The grade distribution
GiphyWhile "normal" academic classes have the good old participation grade, easy homework, sporadic quizzes and maybe a paper or two to bolster your grade against looming midterms and finals, studio classes are basically only made up of finals. I have 3-6 projects throughout the duration of the semester and they're all weighted equally, so if I mess up on one, it's not some 5-point assignment I can deal with taking the "L" on, it's basically a bombed midterm.
2. The project standards
GiphyNow you may be thinking, "you shouldn't be worried about bombing a project, you should be good at art, right?" That question is the art major's biggest obstacle. Yes, this is what we set out to do, just like you chose to do journalism or political science or engineering or something like that. But also, just like you, just because we have an affinity for something doesn't mean we are perfect because, just like Hannah said, "nobody's perfect."
3. The budgeting of time
GiphyIsn't it fun to lay in bed in your pajamas, split screen your homework and Netflix, and maybe have a little snack along with it? I bet. But I don't have that luxury when it comes to my studio classes. I can plan the projects to my heart's content in the comfort of my own bed, but actually working on projects mean's lots and lots of time taken out of my day to be sequestered in the Humanities building for as long as I can possibly muster, so long, in fact, that I lose all semblance of time.
Yes, it's wonderful to be able to create art for a grade, but just because it seems like a hobby to some doesn't mean that it isn't also a lot of work for those who have chosen to make it their sole focus.
So, the next time you think art majors have it easy, remember that we're students just like you just trying to do what we love the best we can.
