April Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, So Here Are 11 Tweets Showing You How Some Of Us Are Handling It

When I was younger and first heard about the concept of sexual assault, I thought it would happen to me when I was walking down a dark alleyway and someone would come up behind me and blitz attack me. Can that happen? Yes, of course. Does it happen more often where you get assaulted by someone that you trusted or met on a dating app? Yes to both. This website holds a few interesting statistics that if they didn't already alarm you, they should now. Now, keep in mind, these are statistics from 2015. I'm sure that the numbers have vastly increased.

  • 1 in 3 women have been a victim of either an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime
  • 321,000 American women are sexually assaulted each year
  • 75% of sexual assault incidents occur in a home
  • In 85% of sexual assaults, the offender was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident
Alright, so you might be thinking, that's vast America...how does this apply to me?
  • There were 19,045 incidents of sexual assault in Texas
  • There were 877 sexual assaults in Williamson and Travis counties
  • 13% of the victims were male
  • 15 to 19-year-old age bracket had the highest number of offenders
  • In 84.7% of the assaults, it was reported that neither drugs nor alcohol was involved
  • 73% of assaults occurred in a home
Yikes. Those are terrifying. In case anyone needs a reminder of what consent means, click HERE.

1. Realizing that sexual assault does not have to be rape.

You are allowed to say no at any point during an encounter with someone.

2. Realizing that consent is both sexy and mandatory.

Honestly, she's not wrong. Being asked if someone can kiss you? Wonderful.

3. Knowing that she is someone.

We need advocates- regardless of how scary it might be to share your story.

4. Believe it or not, rapists cause sexual assault.

I'm so sick of the question "well, what were you wearing?" a T-SHIRT, karen. A t-shirt.

5. If it felt wrong, it was wrong.

Read that again.

6. Here's a casual rape prevention tip: carry a rape whistle so if you feel like you're about to rape someone, blow the whistle until someone can come and stop you.

If you need this demographic, save it to your phone! Set it to be your background! Whatever you have to do!

7. Let's march.

Advocacy: we love to see it. Let's march.

8. Knowing that you can heal and there is support out there.

Let's focus on making this world safer for men and women.

9. There's a large community of survivors rallying for you.

And we're so proud of survivors.

10. Freedom in knowing how to teach our kiddos about consent.

How neat is this? Consent can start from such an early age!

11. Knowing that there is help out there on the hotline.

Don't be ashamed to need it.

StableDiffusion

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
