Anxiety In College: 3 Methods To Help Cope With It

There are days when I let my anxiety get the best of me and there are days when I learn how to tackle it.

I have learned over the past years to be open about accepting that I will continuously face issues with anxiety and not all days are easy. If I have one goal, it is to make a difference in at least one person's life who struggles with hiding their anxiety, which prevents them from being their full self.

However, the most important thing I have comprehended is that there are ways to prevent it from taking over my mind and to do well in school and have fun.

1. Know you are not alone.

At times, my anxiety makes me feel secluded from the rest of the world and that no one will understand how I feel. In fact, there are millions of other people that feel just as I do. I know at night there are others that might be crying themselves to sleep because they miss home or are overwhelmed by the stress of school. Although it might be difficult to remember that in the moment, in due time, it makes a whirlwind of a difference. It is life. Every day cannot be a walk in a park, but push yourself as though each day is the first day of the rest of your life.

2. Put away time for yourself.

There is nothing wrong with being by yourself. Whether it is at the gym, in the shower or that time before you fall asleep, being alone with your thoughts is crucial. Although having a pep talk to yourself might sound nerdy, there is nothing wrong with some motivation to get yourself through the day. Remind yourself of the person you desire to be and the steps that it will take to pursue your goals. Others will be there to help and assist, but it is up to you to be the change.

3. Get involved.

Having several different types of friends is incredible. In college, I have met my friends that are there with me everyday to hang out with, eat with, share secrets with, but I have also met friends that are interested in certain clubs or share the same major as me, and I create a special bond with them that is unique and allows me to push away my anxiety. As I said, having time to yourself is important, but by also surrounding yourself with people who love the same things as you and make you laugh, the thought of anxiety slowly begins to fade away.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
