An Open Thank You Letter To Freshman Year
Sara Doan

As freshman year comes to a close I can only think about all the memories and reflect on it all. As I sit here writing this and procrastinate studying for finals tears form in my eyes. I start to think back to the night before move in. Yet again tears in my eyes that night too. I was a small scared incoming freshman who didn't want to leave her bed, pets, mom, friends and life back home and go to a school she necessarily didn't want to go to. Little did I know that I was about to have the craziest, best, and roller coaster of a year.

So thank you freshman year, thank you for everything. From living in "crusty Cros" to surviving sneaking people upstairs when forgetting to submit an over night request form to 8 am's, and gross on campus food.

First of all thanks to my roommate for not killing me after late nights of deciding to turn our tiny and cluttered dorm room into a gym at 1 am. Thanks for letting me rant to you 24/7, cry to you and have jam sessions to Béyonce and T.I. at 2 am. Thanks for never throwing your pillow at me and my 20 Ed Sheeran alarm clocks that probably go off way too much. It's gonna be weird not living 5 feet away from you (how far away is NOLA again??). Thank gosh we are night people. I don't know what I'd do if you went to bed early. Thanks again for everything Em, I'll miss you tons. Love your crazy loud Arkansas roommate.

Thanks to my CA's. Natalie, and Sarah y'all never ratted me out even when y'all caught me breaking the rules (oh and you might wanna look in Nancy's closet. Sorry, I know, no pets but we couldn't resist). Thanks for being my second people to go to when I need to rant to. I defiantly got lucky and got the two best CA's Ole Miss Housing has to offer.

Sarah, thank you for never kicking me out of your room when I needed someone older to talk to (especially during rush week at midnight). Thank you for helping me with math homework. Thanks for always joking with me and getting my humor and understanding me. You're gonna be a wonderful teacher, any student would be lucky to get you (BTW, I'm the better Sara(h) end of question).

Natalie, thank you for always coming to the rescue when I'm locked out and not wanting to pay $5 to get let back in. Thank you for letting me sleep on your futon when wasp invaded my room that one Sunday night at 3 AM (thxs crusty Cros). Thanks for sharing pizza with me at 1 am and compromising on half and half. Thanks for telling me about the best drinks in town and being a friend first. Ily, Natalie and your cuteness.

Thank you to my friends. I was lucky to have a big group of friends. Some greek, some not, some cheerleaders, some Rebelettes, some athletes, some older, some foreign, some new, and some old. Either way no matter what you fell into thank you, for everything. Without my friends, I wouldn't be able to of survived freshman year. I know people who surrounded themselves with bad people and it didn't turn out well. So thanks again guys.

Abby, thanks for pulling my first all-nighter with me, getting breakfast and watching the sunrise at the Tad Pad.

Getting all my New England jokes, and acting like I was a NE local even if I only spent a little bit up there.

Erika, I'll miss our McDonalds runs, fun times out and just being around you (keeping this short bc I could go on forever and ever). Thanks for never judging me when you see me out and maybe in not the best state of mind. I'm currently getting sad at the thought of you not being here next year. Pennsylvania is gaining back an amazing, wonderful and rad gal.

Alexis, thanks for dragging me out when all I wanted to do was stay in bed and watch Gossip Girl, thanks for all the conversations and time spent in each others dorm talking about YL, boys, and food. Thanks for not telling everyone about the time I (soberly) slipped on frat row and had that huge black and purple bruise on my knee for over a month. I don't know where I'd be without you and don't know what I'll do this summer without you being a few floors down (**insert crying emoji**). S/o YL for bringing us and Erika together.

B&G, thanks for putting up with me as your 3rd roommate. AR crew forever <3. Honestly don't know what I'll do without y'all and The Grill this summer (just teared up a little thinking about it). Wouldn't want to survive 3-hour waits at Urgent Care and on being on 10 medications with anyone else :) Thanks for being my first friends here and everything oh and never doubting me on my breaking up Papa John's cheese sticks. God bless late night food runs, picking people up, boys and PAPA JOHNS.

Becca, I'm just happy you love food as much as I do, and don't ever get annoyed with me since we're together 24/7. Thanks for asking me to bring you a F'real during RebelTHON and than not judging me when I voluntarily deciding to stay till 4 am. Glad I got to correct your grammar and tell you that it's not "queso", but "cheese dip" :) Oh, and thanks for not questioning it anymore when I get cheese dip or cheese fries where ever I go. Thxs for being the best floor mate <3

Thank you to everyone on my floor. 7th Heaven forever. I may not be best friends with all of you or know everyone but I'm thankful to of been on the same floor with you all. S/o to all my neighbors, ily Hannah, Kathryn, Grayson, B, and Mags <3

Thank you to all the P.O.D employee's that I became friends with when being indecisive on what to get as a midnight snack. From our convos on how to turn a vanilla milkshake into a cookies and cream one to the colleges we got rejected from. Shay and Alexis y'all rock.

Thank you, Ole Miss. Touring here spring break of junior year I wasn't sold on you. In fact, I didn't like you. Thanks to my mom for always keeping Ole Miss in my head and having me apply when applications came out in July. Thank you Ole Miss and Oxford for becoming my home away from home. I fall in love with you again every time I walk past the Grove and Lyceum. I can't believe I didn't use to love you. Thank you for introducing me to my best friends.

More importantly, thank you, God. Sometimes you think this might not be a part of your plan but its a part of his plan for you. A plan that's so much better than yours. I'm thankful for everything that freshman year brought to me, the good and the bad. I've grown more than I ever thought I could and learned more than I thought I would. I can't see myself anywhere else now and I'm so thankful that God's plan trumpets over mine. So thank you freshman year for everything: the freshman 15 (which is real, believe me), friends, midnight food trips, nights in w/ bae (aka Netflix), fraternity late nights, weekends spent in the Grove and at the Levee, all the all-nighters, and mini breakdowns.

Sincerely,

Sara

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
