Lady Gaga performed at Super Bowl LI on Sunday, and the response to her halftime show seemed generally pretty positive. However, there were some people that responded like this:
As a casual fan of Lady Gaga, I would like to talk this one out with those who criticized her body.
To the Gaga body shamers out there:
Okay, so you want to talk about her outfits. I’ll indulge you. I feel like we may have been watching different shows, though, because I thought that Lady Gaga’s outfits were on point.
They were sparkly and fun and sexy and classy and flattering and stylish and also, did I mention that they were sparkly?
Performing a halftime show isn’t easy.
When deciding whether or not to criticize a performer, I urge you to not forget that halftime shows (or any concert performance) aren’t short. They are HARD work. She sang seven of her own songs, and she kept up a huge amount of energy throughout the entire show with the focus entirely on her, since she had no guest performers. It truly does not matter whether or not you think Lady Gaga is in shape; the fact that she was able to keep up her energy and perform her show as well as she did speaks louder than your tweets do.
All signs point towards the fact that she sang live.
During her show, Lady Gaga gave a shout out to her parents (how sweet is that!) and spoke to the crowd other times, too. Her speaking lines would have been nearly impossible to lip sync. So, she sang live, and she sounded really good, too. You need to give her credit for that, because in addition to the fact that the performance wasn’t short, it also wasn’t slow or chill. Her vocals, choreography, and presence all remained top notch throughout the show's entirety. It was impressive. For real. Singing is hard work, especially when moving around. And although this is her job, not all artists sing live, especially at events like the Super Bowl, so major props to her.
She literally jumped off of the roof and all you guys can think to talk about is her stomach?
Misogyny is alive and well, ladies and gentlemen. Please don’t ignore all the hard work and talent that went into her show just to focus on her body. Please respect her profession and also please treat her like a human being, not just a body.
There isn’t a “perfect” or “correct” body shape.
Every single person and every single person’s body is beautiful. There isn’t a mold that needs to be conformed to. Whether you have a flat belly, a little bit of belly, or a lot of belly, you are perfect how you are. Everyone should wear what they feel good in, and I think that Lady Gaga is a good example for people everywhere. In the public spotlight, where people are pressured to look flawless always, she showed on national television that every shape is a good shape. She’s real; she’s empowering; she’s perfect just how she is (and so are you!).
Finally, to those of you criticizing Lady Gaga’s body, did you really look at her? I’m sorry (I’m not), but she looked good. And even if you personally disagree, that doesn’t mean you’re right in shaming her. And she's gonna keep on slaying:
Lady Gaga didn’t deserve to be body shamed, nor does anyone else, ever.
