An Open Letter To The U.S. School System

Take a look at this U.S. GOVERNMENT.

It’s no shock that the US has one of the worst education systems, which leads to our less-than-stellar college performance. Yes, there are many facets to this, but my favorite include Gen-Ed’s and classes you must take to accomplish your major.

Yes, I will be in a large amount of debt when I graduate college, and a large amount of that money comes from classes I have no use for in my life.

I understand the want and need for well-rounded citizens, but at what expense is that worth? I can tell you, as one of those students, that the struggle is only deterring me. On more than one occasion, this semester alone, I have had many questioning thoughts of why college is worth it, and none of those questions are because of my major-related courses. No, all the questioning is because of classes I am forced into taking so that I can be “well-rounded”. But, I’ll be the first to tell you, I will never be as well-rounded as you want me to, I won’t remember a damn thing about these classes, and I sure as hell won’t be changing my major because of them.

I am simply taking them to earn a piece of paper, saying I completed my degree, and that I am qualified for my dream job.

Has the US ever thought that maybe we’re doing this wrong? Forcing our youth to take four (at the bare minimum) years to get a degree so that they can earn minimum wage until they can work their way up their DREAM job? Isn’t this long and a bit excessive?

My major classes, together, take maybe three semesters to complete, but I will be in college for nine to complete my degree, three times the amount of what is required by my major.

Let’s drown in debt a little longer though, I don’t need the money, right?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
