An Open Letter To The People Who Hate Odyssey

Why can't we all share our opinions?

An Open Letter To The People Who Hate Odyssey
Odyssey Online

Everyone sees articles. Not just from Odyssey, but from other websites too: Huffington Post, BuzzFeed and a few other random websites. They fill up your Facebook and Twitter news feeds constantly. Whether we like them or not, they're there. And they probably will be for a long time. You either love them or you hate them, and you know what? That's okay.

You are allowed to love articles from Odyssey and you're allowed to hate them. Of course, you are completely entitled to have your own opinion. No one is going to stop you from having your opinion. I promise that I am not going to write an article that hypnotizes you into being obsessed with Odyssey. No one is going to force you to share or read articles that you do not want to read. And no one will ever force you to enjoy them. And certainly, no one is going to force you to write for Odyssey. All I ask is for your respect.

I, along with my fellow writers, write one article every week. Nothing crazy, or absurd, just one article. However, we work hard on our articles. We have a deadline, word counts and various other requirements to meet. We write about things that mean something to us. We write about things we enjoy. If you remember one thing from this article, remember that we work hard on our articles.

And because of that, please show us a little respect. You don't have to love our articles, you don't even have to like them. You can hate them. You don't have to read them. You can if you want to, but you certainly don't have to. You don't have to agree with our articles. And you're more than welcome to share your opinion.

Feel free to tell me you don't agree with my opinion. I'm open to listen to yours. Feel free to tell me that you've found information that disproves my idea or supports yours. I'm open to hearing new perspectives and new facts. I'm open to constructive criticism. If you want to tell me that you hate my writing, or my articles, or my opinions you can do that. Because you are entitled to your opinion. No one can ever stop you from having your own opinion. If you want to tell me my writing sucks, or my opinion sucks, or my perspective sucks, go right ahead. That's exactly what the comments are for.

That being said, you have no right to tell me that my opinion is wrong. My opinion is my opinion and you cannot tell me that it is wrong. You can think it sucks and that you hate it all you want, but how can you prove an opinion wrong or right? You have no right to tell me that my opinion is invalid or that I am not allowed to have my own opinion. You have no right to tell me that I am stupid for having my own opinion or for having a belief that you disagree with. I have the same rights as you and sharing my opinion is one of them.

I write to share my opinion and Odyssey is a platform that allows me to do so. I write to share my thoughts and ideas. I like to write. I like to read the writing of others. You don't have to feel the same way as me. All I ask is that you allow me my opinion just as I allow you yours.

Love,

A writer for Odyssey

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
