An open letter to the people of Rio from an embarrassed American

Dear people of Rio,

The reason I am writing this letter is because the recent events of one of my countrymen. His actions made me feel ashamed to be portrayed to you is such a way. I’m sure you all know about the gold medal winning swimmer Ryan Lochte, and how he lied about an event that happened in your beautiful city. I was shocked to hear of an American being so disrespectful, because I promise you the majority of us are not like that at all. His actions made me ashamed of the fact that he was chosen to represent my nation. He might be a great swimmer, but he couldn't be anything farther from American as his actions prove. He not only dishonored my whole nation in front of the world, but he also dishonored your beautiful city while there as a guest. For that I am sorry. I wish there was a way I could go back in time and prevent him from committing those actions, and telling those lies. Sadly that will never be an option, so all I can ask is that you do not let the actions of a single person ruin your views of an entire nation. His actions do not represent the majority, and I am so sorry that you were even forced to deal with this in the first place. Rio is an amazing city, and for it to have been insulted by someone representing my country is unacceptable. I hope in the future you will find it in your hearts to forgive the terrible deed done to you by an athlete who should have admired and respected you.

Sincerely,

An embarrassed American

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
