Here's to the man who I will never call my president.

An Open Letter To President-Elect Donald Trump
Patheos

Dear Mr. President,

I'd like to start out by being civil and congratulating you on your presidency. By some crazy miracle, America decided that you were best fit to be our president for at the least these next four years. I can't help but wonder, however, as to why. That's the question that's been running through my head ever since 3 a.m. when I woke up from an inconsistent sleep and finally decided to check the results of the election. So let me ask you a few questions:

Why is it that so many people had a restless sleep last night?

Why is it that so many people woke up this morning in fear?

Why is it that all I am seeing on social media is a collective outrage and sadness among so many people?

Why is it that I – a 17-year-old girl – couldn't go to sleep with ease last night?

Why is it that so many American citizens are seriously considering fleeing the country?

Why is it that at 4 a.m. I was wide awake having a conversation with my 21-year-old brother about how afraid and disappointed we were of our country?

Why is it that none of this seems normal?

I'll go ahead and answer that last question for you: it's because it's not normal. Don't get me wrong, we've had past elections where one side was certainly upset and disappointed that their preferred candidate didn't win, but never have I seen or heard of a reaction like this. It's not OK that people couldn't sleep because they were so anxious of what the outcome would be. It's not OK that I've cried at least five times today. It's not OK that my heart feels though as if it's just been shattered into a million pieces. I didn't just go through a break up; I went through a presidential election. It's not OK that there are thousands of people fearing for their lives right now. And the reason for all of this is you.

Mr. Trump, I don't mean to make this a personal attack on you or your beliefs. Because as a great, respectable, qualified woman and First Lady once said, "When they go low, we go high." So I am going to simply do my best to just call it like it is. You are a bully. You are a bigot. You are a racist, misogynistic narcissist. The comments you have made towards women, immigrants, minorities and the LGTBQ+ community are disgraceful. You have chosen an anti-LGTBQ man who believes in conversion therapy as your vice president. With all of the progress we have made in the last several years, I fear that under your presidency, it will all be erased.

But Mr. Trump, it isn't you who scares me the most. It's your supporters. You have built a following of ignorant, racist, white supremacists who blindly follow everything you say. And what I'm most upset about is the satisfaction your supporters now have because of your victory. Not because I'm a sore loser, but because satisfaction is the exact opposite of what they needed to gain out of this election. What they needed was a wake-up call, and your victory did not provide that. Instead, your victory gave them the message that what they're doing is OK. Your message told them that spreading hate, violence, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia is OK. But that is not OK. Everything about that is far from OK. And the fact that you continue to encourage this hate sickens me to my core.

A few days ago, I saw a video surfacing on Facebook. In this video, one of your supporters, a white man, got out of his car and stopped a black man for cutting him off. He used this as an excuse to make a personal attack on this man for his skin color and proceeded to call him a n**ger and try to justify slavery. When the man's wife tried to pitch in from the car, he told her to "shut up and be a woman." He proudly cheered your name throughout the video. These are the kind of people that support you. These are the kind of people I fear. I feel as though our country has just taken a giant step backward in both history and progress.

What further infuriates me is seeing white, male supporters of yours telling people to stop overreacting. Here's the thing, if you're a white male, you don't get to tell people they're overreacting. You don't get to tell anyone anything. Because as white male, your rights are completely protected under Trump. You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Privilege is when you think something is not a problem because it's not a problem to you personally. So you aren't allowed to ignorantly call out minorities for being afraid because they have every right to be afraid.

Another thing that breaks my heart is the pure ignorance of your supporters. I'm tired of seeing your supporters say that liberals unfairly generalize all of them as racist, sexist and anti-LGTBQ just because they support you. I constantly see your supporters say that they don't agree with all of those beliefs. But here's the thing, it doesn't matter if as an individual you aren't racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, etc, because as long as you support a man who is, then you indirectly support all of those things. You don't get to pick and choose. Your supporters support all of the hatred you stand for because they support you, whether they like it or not.

Mr. Trump, you aren't a Republican. You are a fascist. You stand for hatred and divisiveness. You are the most disrespectful, disgraceful, unqualified presidential candidate I have ever known. You have shown people that bullying and spreading hate is OK. You have raised a following of people who do not accept or respect anyone who is different than them. They cannot accept other human beings regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity or religion. You don't care about your supporters. All you care about is your own personal gain. And for that, you will never gain my respect.

So Mr. Trump, the point of this letter is this: I want you to know that whether you serve for one or two terms or completely take total control, no matter what happens, I will never call you my president. And you will never be mine.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
