To My College Roommate, As Move-In Day Approaches
Jenna Reed

On my fridge, I have a white dry erase board, and on it I have a countdown.

My countdown is how many days I have left until college move in day. As nervous as I am, the excitement has slowly started taking over the nervousness, and everyday I become more excited. However, this is not about my excitement. This is a letter to the girl I'm going to share it with -- my roommate.

Dear Roomie,

As move in day gets closer and closer, I am unable to contain my excitement. After I had something happen to me that was somewhat of a shock, I joined RoomSurf to find a new roommate (Side note, RoomSurf is AMAZING. Shout out to them for how they match people, and thank you for helping me find my roomie). From the moment that we started talking, we had a connection and it was almost as if we had known each other for years. From us bonding over our cats and our love of Grey's, to talking about our pet peeves, to realizing after two hours of talking that we have a million things in common, and that we should most definitely be roommates, it's been a crazy and wonderful journey.

Finding a new best friend that I can not only relate to on a level of common interest, but also on a level of personality, childhood, life, and quality, has made for a spectacular friendship that has made me beyond excited for move in and to be your roommate. I didn't think it was possible for me to find such a sweet, caring, loving, sassy, and compassionate person, who is just as good of a person as they are a friend. I can't wait for our three hour long FaceTime sessions to turn into three hour long conversations before bed, study sessions, lunch dates in the quad, workouts at the campus gym, laundry-doing, or Starbucks after a long day.

I am most certainly ready to become your roommate. I promise to be there for the heartbreaks -- to be your sponge if you are going through tough times and need someone to yell at. I promise be your personal hair-braider when you need it -- to be your person, to take you home with me when I come home to visit my mom on weekends, and to always go to the quad with you when you ask. I promise to study with you if you need help, to put up with your sass, to always answer when you call or text, and to watch over you at parties, like I know you'll do for me. I promise to do my best to not be passive if I have a problem -- to be the best friend that you deserve, to always understand you, help you out, drink coffee with you, give you advice, let you borrow my clothes when you ask, and everything else that a roommate is supposed to do and be for their roommate.

It's coming up quick, I'll see you then!

Love,

Your soon to be roommate.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
