An Open Letter To My Mom From College

Dear Mom,

Yes, I usually don’t go a day without calling you. Sometimes it's just to ask you how to do something around my apartment, but mainly it's because I miss you more than you know. If you do not hear from me, it is probably because I am at a meeting, volunteering, studying, and trying to have a social life. Still, there are still many things that I want you to know.

You truly are my inspiration.

You have taught me what truly matters in life just by being you. You went to school to become a hairdresser because it was something that you loved doing. You never did it for the money, nor did you do it for any type of recognition. You did it because it made you happy, which is something that many people fail to do in today’s society that is so driven by money and superficiality. So thank you for showing me that while money is important, it also isn’t everything. You could be given 1,000,000 dollars to go shopping for yourself and you would still end up spending it on your kids, our cat, or even giving it to others in need.

Let's not forget the fact that the clothes that you do have, I end up borrowing or stealing. I hope that you take it as a compliment. I really do love and miss the few articles of clothing that you do have.

Your positive attitude has taught me that things usually do happen for a reason. Yes, we may not know the reason at the time and some people may find this quote a foolish one to live by, but what this quote really gives is a brighter way to look at things.

I also can’t deny the fact that you are the best friend who anyone could ever have. You are always there for everybody so often that you sometimes forget to take time for yourself, but that’s what happens when you have such a caring soul as a mother and a friend. Seeing the type of friend who you are has showed me the type of friend who I want to be and who I believe that everybody should be. You also showed me how it really isn’t about being best friends with everybody, but having those few special people who truly care and just understand you.

Now that I'm in college, I have started to appreciate all that you do just that much more. I've realized that you worry and freak out sometimes simply because of how much you care. I want you to never forget how thankful I am each and every day to have a mom like you. Everything that you have done for me as a parent, and as a friend, has lead me to be the person who I am today. I can only hope to live out my passions like you did and have kids who look up to me in the way that I look up to you. Thank you for all that you do and all that you are.

Love always,

Your little girl in college

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
