An Open Letter To My Little Sister

Nobody can replace a little sister as special as you.

To my little sister:

Whether you like it or not, we need each other, and if you ask me, that’s the coolest thing ever.

I need you. I need you when I need to talk about the good, bad, ugly, stressful and silly moments. I need you to give me advice about growing up the same way that I talk to you. Because even though you’re my little sister, you’re growing up, too.

And as I see you growing up, it’s bittersweet. In the blink of an eye, you’ve gone from this little squishy thing that used to keep me up all night to this beautiful young woman. It’s weird because I used to be the one who was responsible for teaching you things. Teaching you different words, how to do things and all the ways to avoid getting in trouble with mom and dad.

But here you are, growing up way too fast, and teaching me things.

You’ve taught me that you’ll always be there for me, no matter how old we get and no matter how far apart we are. You’ve taught me that I can always rely on you.

This is important because as we get older, we’re going to have to rely on each other more and more. We’re both going to struggle with growing up, and we’re going to struggle with the people around us. But it’s okay because nobody knows me better than you.

The same can also be said for you, because I know you too well. I know when you’re upset, even if you don’t tell me, and you know when I’m hurting, even if I don’t tell you.

But as my sister, we know the perfect ways to cheer each other up. You know all the ways to make me laugh, and girl, nobody makes me laugh better than you do.

Yeah, there might be other important people in my life, but you can’t be replaced. Nobody will ever tell me how it is like you will.

So as your big sister, just know how grateful I am to have a little sister like you. I can’t even begin to explain how different my life would be without a little sister. I don’t like that image at all. You’re the one that I want to talk to when i’m having a bad day or when I achieve something big.

It’s just important that you know this: I’ll always be there for you, girl. Because nobody can replace a little sister as special as you.

Love always,

Your big sister

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
