An Open Letter to My Freshman Self From The Senior You

I Wish I Could Have Told Myself These Things

An Open Letter to My Freshman Self From The Senior You
Cedar Crest College

Dear Freshman Me,

I know moving into your dorm was a big deal and the guy you're dating seems great, but trust me things will change.

Your first semester will be the hardest. It is a big transition between high school and college. Class will be different and so will be the grading. Make sure to study and do the homework, I promise it will be worth it one day. There may be things you don't understand in class but don't be afraid to ask for help, you know you will need it.

Don't be afraid to try new things. Step outside your comfort zone, you won't regret it.

While trying new things, don't lose sight of who you are. That's the hardest thing to do. Stay true to yourself. College is a time to learn what you like and more about who you are, make sure you have time to do that.

Don't overwhelm yourself with activities. Yes, this means learn to say no. You have a bad habit never saying no and you need to stop that.

Don't surround yourself with people that don't support your dreams or people that make you feel less of a person. There will be people you think you can trust but learn that's not the truth. Don't stay too upset about it though. Your life is better without them. Don't let anyone tell you aren't worth it either. Allow your friends to help you. Don't bottle up your emotions and your problems, talk to someone. Just because the relationship isn't working out doesn't mean you won't find happiness. Sometime in the future someone will walk into your life and you will realize why nothing ever worked out with anyone before.

Take time to relax. This is the best advice you'll ever get. Feeling stressed? Lay down, close your eyes and listen to music or even take a nap. Go for a walk or to the gym. You can't think straight when you have too much on your mind, so clearing it before working on homework can help you think more clearly.

Don't be afraid to question things. Question why you are doing something. Question your goals so you are forced to make reachable ones. Question your decision to declare a major or minor so you know it's what you want to do.

Work hard, but don't forget to reward yourself. You deserve it.

Your freshman year is going to fly by fast even though it doesn't seem like it right now. And the rest of your time in college will follow behind it at light speed. Make the best of your time and continue to find yourself. Make new friends and don't forget to give yourself some alone time. Have fun but don't lose sight of your goals.

You will make through this year and the next couple years!

Love,

Your Senior Self

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
