An Open Letter To My Family As I Realize How Old I am Getting

First of all thank you for letting me learn not just from you, but also from myself. Being a junior in college now (not sure how that happened) I am grateful that you stepped back and let me live, grow, and learn on my own. I am well aware that you guys are there for me at 2 in the morning if I were to call and need help, but thank you for giving me the freedom to learn and grow on my own, especially in college.

I know I don’t call you as much as I should and you may think I have forgotten about you at times, but please know I have not. School, work, and being involved in multiple organizations keeps me thoroughly, and I mean thoroughly, busy. Don’t get me wrong, I do love being busy and always having things to need do and responsibilities that need done but please know I am appreciative of everything you’ve done to get me to where I am today so I can have this busy lifestyle I am use to having.

Thank you for giving me the chance to participate in sports and clubs and organizations growing up so I have those experiences to rely upon when I continue my involvement in college and am able to build upon them when creating resumes and preparing for future jobs. It is because of you, your constant support, and encouraging words that pushed me to accomplish those tasks back then, right now, and in the future.

I know we no longer look like your "little babies" anymore, but deep down, whether we show it or not, we do sincerely love you and enjoy our time with you even if it is just on breaks from school and holidays. It still takes me by surprise when I call home and catch you all up on life and how things are going at school that you are all so understanding and confirming that what I feel is normal and that you’ve been there and done that and no matter how stressed or confused I am at the time, you reassure me that things going to be okay and aren’t hard forever.

Thank you for being my backbone when I need it and letting me grow and experience life away from home on my own. I have been able to get a job, balance school, work, and community involvement and still manage to get myself up on time (almost every day). Without your teachings and lessons growing up, who knows where I would be today. Thank you for the home cooked meals when I come home to visit, always doing my laundry when I show up on breaks, and accepting my need to do nothing but sleep and eat when I am home.

As I realize how close I am to graduating college please remember that even though I may not always show it, but I will always be willing to sit on your lap, watch movies and catch you up on my life no matter how long it’s been since we last had the chance to. I appreciate all your love and support over the years and would not have made it this far without you.

I love you guys.

Sincerely,

Your close-to-graduating-college kid

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
