Christina Grimmie, popularly known on YouTube and for being a "Voice" contestant, was shot following a Friday night concert with Before You Exit in Orlando, Florida June 10. The 22-year-old singer was inside the concert venue signing autographs and meeting fans when 27-year-old male Kevin James Loibl approached her and shot her three times. Orlando Police stated Loibl appears to have no personal association with Grimmie and are still searching for a motive behind the confrontation.
It deeply saddens my heart that something tragic like this happened. Any kind of shooting is devastating, but it's when it happens in an environment that you usually feel safest and most alive that especially hits close to home. How can such terror ring throughout a place that is supposed to bring people together to celebrate something so full of life, community and art.
Christina was doing what she loved and meeting with fans the night she died. The shooter got into the concert venue armed with two handguns, a knife and extra bullets in two magazines. The security at the venue were unarmed and only checked bags and purses; there were no pat-downs or any type of metal detectors to check people as they entered the venue.
Christina later passed Saturday morning, and many people all over the world took to social media to express an outpouring of grief. From family members, to friends, to fans, to celebrities, everyone who was touched by Christina's life and joy had something to say. At 22-years-old and gifted with an amazing amount of talent and potential, Christina was taken from this world too soon.
I, along with many frequent concert attendees and fans, expressed on social media platforms like Twitter how devastating it is that something like this could happen inside a concert venue. Performers, musicians, the fans and anyone else inside should not have to fear for their life or the lives of others when attending an event that is supposed to allow them to focus on the moment, the music and forget about the rest of the world. We live in a world where there needs to be more security, more of a checkpoint before people enter buildings like this.
Singer/songwriter Alexander DeLeon, known for being the lead singer of pop rock band The Cab, perfectly summed up everything bottled inside of me. He tweeted:
My thoughts and prayers go out to Christina's family, friends and fans. I am beyond devastated that things like this happen in our world and enter the news frequently. Christina was a beautiful soul who many loved, cherished and adored. Her joy and love for music was contagious and will continue to be respected by so many.
Riley McDonough, member of the band Before You Exit that was touring with Christina, tweeted this the morning she passed. She was known by many for her faith and it's comforting to know she is in a better place.
To concert venues all across America and in major cities, please, don't take this lightly. This is a wake up call, something that needs to be enforced immediately as our world continues to enter a downward spiral. We need to act now, the unimaginable needs to stop happening. Whether that's enforcing stricter rules, having metal detectors and more security. Whatever it takes to make events like this safer, it needs to happen.
