An Ode To "Off The Wall"

'Cause You Can Do It All

An Ode To "Off The Wall"
Where to Get It

This is for you, my classic Vans.

I remember when I first saw you, I was in eighth grade. I was shopping with my mom who was attempting to convince me to buy you. She called you the "perfect shoe for anything," and I called you the "ugliest things ever" (I took it back, I promise, and I cannot believe I ever said such a thing) I left the store, displeased with my mom's recommendation (I was usually displeased with all of her recommendations). But, you were truly the perfect shoe. Mom was right.

A few months later, I had a sudden change of heart the moment my socked foot slid into you. And we've been together ever since. Happy nine year anniversary! You have been loyal to me. Thought the good and the bad, you always helped me take that one extra step.

Over the course of nine totally kick-ass years, you've allowed me to wear you in virtually every season. Literally. Every. Single. One. Your magical material has kept me cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It's not everyday that you meet a shoe with this kind of versatility. Snow, rain, or shine, you manage to work better than the other brands, keeping my toes happy, my feet comfy, and not to mention how stylish you always make me look.

I've worn you hiking (the grips on your bottoms make you surprisingly perfect), to the beach, to work, to school, and even to a wedding (how is it that you look so great paired with any outfit and every environment?) And every time you get dirty, I toss you in the wash, and you emerge looking brand new. It's like I'm getting a new pair of shoes every week. Our relationship couldn't possibly get any better. Most things in life you can't just throw in the wash and hope for a brand new start, but you always give that to me while still molding effortlessly to my foot. Your sole, intertwined with my soul. You are so much more than a shoe.

Somehow, over the course of all these walks, weddings, and washes, you've achieved the perfect "worn-in" look. Never raggedy or dirty looking, just worn, like we have a history together. And with this "worn-in" look, you have adapted yourself to fit my foot absolutely flawlessly. I can wear you and walk for hours. Blisters? No such thing. Pinching? No way jose! My Vans would never treat me that way. You're the ideal best friend, even though you are simply a shoe. Those who walk together stay together.

Here's to you my all event, all weather, all anything (and everything) shoe. You are off the wall, because you keep me going. You fit me in the best ways possible.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
