There is something so beautiful about making music with others

We are in that season everyone! There has been so much Christmas music on the radio, many invitations to Christmas parties, and many winter pictures as the first snow has now arrived. You can't help but get in the Christmas spirit!

I love Christmas. I love Christmas music, I love the ugly sweater parties you go to. And of course, I love the feeling of when you are done with finals and are able to actually enjoy the season!

While the holidays are a great time, as I said last week the holidays are a difficult time for many. But, those of us who are able to enjoy the holidays are able to bless others. That is another reason I love the holidays—the ability to give and to receive!

For those of you reading this that believe in Jesus Christ, we are able to celebrate Him coming to earth to bring heaven on to us earth, and it is an amazing gift. Year after year we are able to celebrate! There is nothing quite like singing in a room full of other people that believe and are willing to worship.

I have been able to experience this amazing feeling through being in choir for most of my life. This phase of my life is coming to a close soon, as I am a senior.

Here is a quick reflection of my time:

I started singing in choir when I was very little. I cannot quite put it in words, but I remember hearing beautiful harmonies in the choir and feeling something beautiful rising up within me.

As I moved through middle school, I began to want more out of choir, to learn harder music, to make my time in choir a time where I would work hard.

When I was in 8th grade, the chamber choir needed more male songs and I decided to try out and it was the best decision I have ever made. The people I sang with were dedicated singers and we sang some beautiful music and a deep passion for this sacred music continued to rise within me.

As I moved into high school I began to be in choir and we focused on A Capella music. Once again my passion was deepened with the power of just the voices. Choir became a time where I could just sing and express myself through the music, and at the same time, worship the Lord.

My original intention for going to college was to stop doing music. However, after that experience I knew that I wanted to stay in choir but also I knew that God wanted me to as well. What I remember from my first rehearsal in college was walking in the room pretty confident of my abilities. I sat in the second row in between two seniors who were excellent tenors in the choir. We began to warm up and did some warm ups with harmonies intermixed. In that moment, my mind was blown by how good this choir sounded.

This was just the warm ups people! I suddenly felt intimidated and knew that this choir was just fine on its own without me trying to sing in it. We then opened our binders and started to sing a Bach piece. If you are not familiar with music or Bach, just believe me when I say that it is hard to sing! There were notes going all over the page. There were notes that I did not even know existed in my part and I suddenly became frustrated that I could not sing it perfectly.

I am still grateful to the two seniors on my left and right who helped me sing this hard music. But then, as the practice started to wind down, we sang this version of the hymn Praise to the Lord the Almighty. This version has the guys singing the melody and the women singing this amazing counter melody that still blows me away as I remember that day. We started singing this song and right away that feeling inside me that I had for all those year returned to me and I knew God wanted me in this choir.

This past weekend the Choir and orchestra from my college had their winter concert entitled Gloria. We sang Vivaldi's "Gloria" to a pentatonix version of Mary Did You Know.

At the very end of the concert we ended with a song of benediction entitled Pax Dei. Literally translated means peace of God. This song was the same song we ended every concert my freshman year with. As I stood there reflecting on my four years at Trinity, I could see the peace of God with me every step of the way.

As an intimidated and frustrated freshman boy the peace of God was with me. Now as a senior, I feel and believe the peace of God and as I stood there just one person alongside so many talented worshipers.

During that performance I just kept thanking God.

To my directors, past and present, to my friends who I have made music with over these years, I wanted to say thank you.You have impacted my life so much and I can't wait for when we get to eternity to sing together again!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
