I am just gonna start this off by saying, I hate dating. Yes, there I said it. Want to know why? Because we, the so-called Millennials, have ruined it. Those who know me are probably thinking "Sophia you've never even been in a serious relationship", which they are correct, but for a good reason. In today's society, there is no such thing as "old fashioned", we call it retro or vintage because apparently we think we are too good for it. I know all girls say they want to go on dates, no, not Netflix and chill and absolutely not a booty call, yet we never actually try to make it happen, we just tweet about it. Which is why I want to scream at technology because you, my friend, have ruined it for us all even though we are guilty of giving into you.
In the world we live in technology plays a big role with all of the social media gadgets which has begun to take over us when it comes to relationships and communication, like okay apparently it is a terrible thing that the guy you like opened your Snapchat but did not reply to your text yet, calm down girl. Or my all time favorite example being when your special someone replies to your text with a "." and suddenly it is the end of the world. Every single day we are learning more on how to hide behind our phones than to actually communicate.
Then when it comes to being in a relationship or building one, there is the so called status, talking? not talking? kind of exclusive but we can still talk to other people? friends with benefits but one person has feelings? Just thinking about all of the labels one relationship can have gives me a headache. We are so afraid of being upfront with ourselves and our significant other's that it will only complicate the relationship and change the status to "It's Complicated".
So I ask you this, girls AND boys, don't you want less complicated relationships? Then take away the nonsense and stress you put on yourselves by getting upset that he or she has not replied to your text yet or he hasn't messaged you first and apparently it is always the guys job. No. Stop hiding behind our evil phones and let us begin to learn how to enjoy each other's company, in person, and find relationships the "old fashioned way" since it worked out so well for Romeo and Juliet, well kind of.
Next time you see that guy or girl you have been interested in, go talk to them, not stalk their entire life through Instagram or Facebook, and yes we all have done that.
