To Americans that Keep Telling Immigrants To Go Back To Their Country, Stop Being So Ignorant

This land is your land, this land is my land.

After reading some unruly Facebook comments about religion, politics, and American citizenship, I have come to the realization that those who comment and tell people, "to go back to your country" really are ignorant.

No, let me explain.

See, I get what you are going to say: right now you are a little pissed-off that someone just called you ignorant, but you are. My first question is, where are you from? Ah, yes, the United States. The U. S. of A. You probably have at least 5-7 generations going back. Your family was born and raised in America. That's cool, you should be proud of where you are from.

But do not forget that just because your family raised you here and rooted themselves in this land, means you can dictate who is welcomed.

Many of the people who have immigrated to the United States do not do it because they have to. No; rather they do it because it is the best option for them and their family.

Other countries are still in civil wars and give their citizens no rights. They want to give their family the opportunity to succeed and to have the same freedoms you have come to enjoy.

Who wouldn't want that?

We have been privileged to live in a country that does not have bombs go off every hour of the night. Our children do not have to worry if they will be forced to marry at a young age because it is illegal here. We have so many rights here and we are fortunate enough to be able to utilize them to make our lives even better.

There are good and bad in every religion and race, ethnicity and culture. That is a given, and I know you will choose to only point out the negative people who have caused turmoil here in the United States.

Now let me take you back to pre-colonial times. Prior to the Europeans making contact with the Indigenous peoples of this land we call America, land that was not seen as a commodity to these native peoples.

On the contrary, Natives were connected to the land spiritually and culturally.

Every aspect of their lives depended upon the land. They had a respectful relationship with the land and knew how all of its processes worked. You could not buy this land. This land, although it had no owners, had protectors. These native protectors tended to the land and saw it as what it is, another form of life.

Upon European contact, this relationship between human and land became a relationship between human and profit.

Have you ever noticed how immigrants tend to work harder than American-born citizens? Is that just a coincidence? I think not. They see the opportunities and grab it because that is how they make their lives better.

You also have the chance to work harder and become better. It is not just what blood runs through your veins, it is how you utilize opportunities in this country.

Do not blame an immigrant for your lack of education and career choices — you have to work hard, too.

Being an American citizen is not a bad thing. I am an American citizen. There is nothing wrong with that. It's only certain American citizens that choose to use their freedom of speech to be ignorant and be prejudiced against non-Americans that make me upset.

C'mon guys, we are better than this. There is already enough hate in the world. Let's spread positivity and succeed together.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
