Even though America has a lot of differences, we always come together to support hard times despite our differences. When the Las Vegas mass shooting occurred during the Jason Aldean concert, America was once again shaken. The fact that it was the largest mass murder in American history answers why it has affected so many people across the board. With 58 dead and 500 injured, there are a lot of people that have been directly affected by this horrendous act. Let alone their families and friends, as well as the witnesses at the concert. With the knowledge that there are such putrid people in this world, it makes being a part of society a scary endeavor, as many people put their guard up. While it is good to keep your guard up, it is okay to be vulnerable at times. When people turn cold due to tragedies, this world turns cold and nothing is stronger than love. As Matt Damon said in Patriots Day (2016), “What I saw today, good versus evil, love versus hate, we’ve one weapon to fight back with: it’s love”. When tragedies such as the Boston Marathon bombings and the Las Vegas shooting occur, we MUST fight back. When we fight back with hate towards each other due to fear and paranoia, we only create what these terrorists are attempting to induce in us; which is for us to turn on each other. However, if we stand up bravely to these terrorists and support one another, we become victorious through love. When Americans come together to love each other during times of distress and hardship, we prove we aren’t afraid. A brave warrior, Heather Gooze, was working as a bartender when she was called over to a man who was laying lifeless who had been shot. When asked why she stayed she responded with, “I didn’t want Jordan to not have somebody”. She picked up his phone and answered calls to explain his critical condition, one being his own mother. To have that responsibility is one of the most heartbreaking and toughest roles; however, when brave people step up to the plate, it’s an inspiration to us all. Love is the only thing that doesn’t divide or break us. It causes people such as Jerry Cook to cover his own wive’s body with his own, saving her and getting fatally shot. As Victor Frankl once said to a patient who asked him why he had to lose his wife, he respodned with “you saved her the suffering that you’re experiencing now”. Jerry Cook could’ve saved himself, but he took a bullet for his wife so that she could survive and not have to experience the tragedy and pain of losing him instead. When you love somebody so much, you innately do things like take a bullet for them. That’s the kind of love that inspires the rest of us to love each other, despite the fear of getting ourselves hurt. What happens when parents lose one of their children during a time they were supposed to not be worrying, but having fun? What happens when a significant other loses their significant other right in front of their eyes? Just ten minutes of gunfire can cause an entire nation to be shaken. But we must not let it destroy us. The hate in this world is not okay and it must not be valued. It needs to be exempt and gone. Love needs to overpower the hate until there are no more tragedies like these. It is okay to not be okay. It is okay to allow compassion to get the best of you. But we need to rise up and show our support for the rest of those who are suffering. These tragedies are not something that are distant. They occur in our own country. But it’s time to rise and fight.
